Anyway you look at it, 2017 will be the draft we won’t forget as Bears fans. You may not recall every single draft over the years… a few may stick out. But this year’s… yeah, I’m going to bet almost all of us will remember.
Of course the conversation will always begin with Trubisky. The type of QB that he becomes will ultimately determine the overall success or failure of this year’s draft. Obviously, if he turns out to be THE guy, then everybody talking negative will eat their words. I will do the same. I still can’t believe that they traded 3 picks to move up 1 spot… in the position of this team today… with all of its needs. I mean, does Ryan Pace know more than all the other GMs in the NFL? What does he see in this guy that most others do not?
He’s no sure thing; there aren’t many of those. I firmly believe we could have gotten him at 3. That would have still been surprising, but more easily accepted… in my humble opinion. Nobody predicted the Bears would take him with the 3 pick. It was a very, very, very well kept secret; some reports say Fox didn’t even know. With that being said, and having no problem with it, why the hell did we have to trade half our draft picks to move up one spot? You get it? I’m thinking, with first year GM John Lynch in control, he would not have traded that second pick away unless he got a huge haul; he did, so he did. Nobody else was going to offer that; I’ll wait for the report that proves me wrong. He was ours at 3… he was our secret pick… there was no need to trade up to get him.
The opposite side of the argument will say, well, what if somebody actually DID trade up and get him? Then I say, so what! So we move on to the next guy on our list. Was this guy really worth that? Not many think so, but it doesn’t matter what many think. It matters what Pace thinks. Let me tell you, I hope he’s right.
Just like with the rest of the draft. Surely we would stock up the defensive picks the rest of the way out… A tight end? Don’t we still have Zach (don’t call me Zack) Miller and didn’t we just acquire another one, Dion Sims? We think this kid, from a non-Division 1A school, is going to be great? Other than that reasoning, why else pick a tight end now? We do have other needs. He was the best player available on the Bears board? OK, well, it certainly seems like we pick and choose when we follow that theory. You can’t tell me Trubisky was rated ahead of everybody else on the Bears board…

But I get it… you have to overdraft at certain positions, especially at QB. Just don’t tell me he was best available. I’m fine with jumping up and getting the guy we think is going to be awesome; same with the TE pick in the 2nd round. Finally, we took a defender in the 4th round, after dumping all of our 3rd round picks… Safety from Alabama sounds great, except his injury concerns… Then a RB next… yeah, a RB! We have Howard, Carey, and Langford, but we felt the need to pick up a 3rd down back at this point? Finally, an OL… something we actually needed.
It was an all or nothing draft. If these guys don’t work out, most importantly Trubisky, then Pace should be canned. He went out on a big time limb. I respect him for it; I’m not totally hating on it. But, he better be right. If you think you’re smarter than everybody else, and you don’t really have a proven track record, and you’re making these type of picks… you better be right.
I really hope he is. I’m willing to say the jury is out. I’m willing to wait and see. Not easy coming off a 3 win season… And with most of these picks, if not all of them, not having any impact on this next year, how much better will we be? Vegas has the over/under win total at 5… 5!!! I know it’s a rough start to the schedule, and we’re coming off a 3 win season, but I certainly expected much better.
I expected to feel much better after this draft too… one we will never forget. This will tell the story of the Bears into the next decade. It’s 31 years and running on the last Super Bowl title; how long will we have to wait? This draft will go a long way in finding that answer.

I can also remember a Chicago team that wanted to be the team with the twin towers, but that’s for another blog. Atlanta made a similar trade a few years ago to get Jones (WR), but they moved from 27 to 6 and gave up the farm for him. That paid off in most ppls eyes.
The NFL should change the draft rules by making each team draft an OT first. If you are rebuilding or established, you can never have too many.
My issue is, why sign Glen-boy to that big of a contract and front load it? He would have come for half the money. It todays NFL, it u draft a QB at #2 and plan to sit him for 3 years, your NUTS!

Ryan Pace was at a fork in the road heading into this offseason. What would he do? Well, he started out making moves in free agency, including signing Mike Glennon to be the Bears qb. Now, he headed into the draft ready to make big waves and did. Trading 2 picks from this year’s draft and another next year to move up 1 spot to get the franchise qb that nobody thinks was there. Followed by a tight end in the 2nd round, an injured safety, a running back, and finally an offensive lineman…3 guys from fcs football. I mean, a tight end with the 35th pick? Really? A running back when we have a stable full? None of these picks are without questions. Pace ignored the fork in the road and went his own way, down a dusty dirt path that he may not return from. For his sake and ours, we hope it leads to a lush green paradise on the football field with all the moves and choices he made. Only time will tell with these picks. I do not like or agree with his draft picks, but I have no other choice than to be on that pace bus hoping he makes me eat my pessimism. I would have no problem doing it if Trubisky is the guy. BEAR DOWN!!!

Pace Bus… I like that!
