Happy Birthday to my boy… a clean dozen now. Man, how these 12 years have flown by. I remember just the other day when he was born…
We had been in the hospital almost 24 hours; my wife was having the time of her life… haha. There is a reason why women go through child birth and not men. Say what you want, but they’re stronger than us… We were patiently waiting until… my son pooped; now, there was some urgency to get him out. The C section decision was made, and the wheels were put in motion. After they took my wife away, they said they’d be back soon to get me… I don’t know how long it was, but it felt like forever. I was pacing around the hospital room in my scrubs, waiting… waiting… where the hell are they?!?! It was probably like 5 minutes… haha. They grabbed me and walked me back. Half of my wife was behind the curtain; I stood on the other half and held her hand. It wasn’t long that I heard a baby crying… our boy had arrived!
Two weeks later, I headed back to work; I remember that morning. It was the first time I left him, but it most certainly wouldn’t be the last. I sat him up and talked to him before I walked out the door, as if he understood me. I held his entire back in my hand, as he yawned and looked up at me. Now, he’s a little man. Everyone always told me how fast time would fly by, and they were right… they were all right.
So now, here’s this almost teenager… kicking butt in school, playing a ton of sports, handsome, funny, caring, thoughtful, etc, etc, etc… I imagine most people would say the same about their kids. Not every kid can be this way, right? Well, kids are pretty great in general; it’s the adults that eventually F them up. I’m glad we haven’t F’d him up so far. In fact, I’d say my wife and I are doing a pretty good job. He really is a great kid.
Yes, we were all back together after our travels to celebrate his birthday. He opened a bunch of gifts, received a bunch of phone calls, and then the 3 of us headed to dinner together; it was a really nice day. Having been in Florida the past 5-6 days, he didn’t really want to do much else, except play his XBOX, which he had been missing… haha. Nothing wrong with that; my wife and I were definitely not going to complain about some chill time. We had blown up some balloons, put some streamers up, to make the house festive; his party would be on Saturday with some of the family. More gifts, more food, more fun…
It has been a ton of fun being a Dad; it’s probably by favorite “job” of all. I’m a lot better at it than being a husband… haha, although at times, they go hand in hand. So yeah, on this day, I thank my wife, Mom, for making this all possible, and of course, my son… Happy 1-2 boy!
