No I’m not going to be talking about John Elway, Mickey Mantle, George Halas, Jody Davis, Victor Caratini, Tim Anderson, Toni Kukoc, Chris Chelios, or Brent Seabrook.  No, this is about our new number seven.  My son turns 7 years old today.

Where to begin…  well, he had to go to school on his birthday, so that sucks.  Should we have pulled him out for his birthday?  My wife won’t let me work on mine…  That’s OK; he still likes going to school, plus he got to bring donuts and milk for all his classmates and hear them sing Happy Birthday to him… so that’s cool.  Yeah, my day started at about 530am and a trip to Dunkin Donuts to line up the treats.  After that it was back home; everybody had to be up early.  My son wanted to go out to breakfast before school, so we did.  Got to the restaurant about 7am, and he got his pancakes with strawberries & chocolate chips with eggs and sausage: the hungry kid!  Big thing for him lately is trying to reach the 4 foot mark; he’s right there.  When we go for his official 7 year old checkup, he may be there.  So we’ve been using this opportunity to nudge him to eat better… that will help him grow… it is true though.  He had one growth spurt, but I imagine a few more are coming.  My wife and I are not small people.

We asked him what his favorite year was, out of the 7 he’s had on this earth thus far.  He said his 1st and 2nd years… and then this one.  That’s funny, because how much through the age of 2 do you really remember?  Anyways, if you ask us, it’s every year… every year thus far has been great… every year keeps getting better.  He’s pretty awesome, that’s for sure.  I’m guessing we’re still in the golden ages… meaning, at this point, it’s all gravy.  Yeah, he has his little attitude sometimes; couple days in school he acts up.  He has his famous lines for us, like this out of one of his favorite books:  “You’re not the boss of me”…haha.  But that’s all to be expected as he grows up, and tries to be independent, not wanting to hear Mom and Dad always tell him what to do.  But that’s not going to change for a while… I’m sure it will be more challenging as the years go by.  But yeah, we’re still good… at least for another few years.

There’s just so much more I could say.  As far as his sports life goes, I coached him in baseball, basketball, and floor hockey since his last birthday.  He was the elder statesman in each of those sports in the 4-6 year old division, but will now be the young buck as he moves to the next 7-9 age group.  I think we’ll see in these next few years which he really likes the best, and which ones he’s the best at.  And we can’t forget about swimming; he’s been in the pool since he was 18 months.  Looking into potentially joining a swim team at some point this year.  All good stuff no doubt.

But let’s cut it here, and just say, with all the fun my wife and I have had, all the things we’ve done, all the places we’ve went, he is by far the best thing we’ve ever done together.  Love him more than anything.  Happy Birthday Boy… have to read this to you before bed one night.
