April 3, 2015: Good Friday

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 1

Friday is always a good day. Friday is the last day of that work week. It’s the start of the weekend. It’s especially good when you don’t work it. This Friday was that type of good.

Coming off a Thursday night win against the Canucks, the Hawks clinched a playoff berth.  That’s the way to start off a Friday morning.  We’re back in the playoffs.  Anybody else ready to get back in there and make up for last year?  They’ve been playing good hockey. They seem to be peaking at the right time. They should have slaughtered the Sabres tonight.  Well, it was anything but that. What looked like another loss to a subpar team, our Captain saved the day.  A rebound goal and a 2 on 1 finish, both in the last two minutes, guided the hawks from a misstep.  He’s been playing as good as anybody.  The best part of his season is about to begin too.

The Bulls helped make this Friday a good one too.  They found themselves in a similar situation at home against the pistons.  After being up 25, they were in a dogfight late.  Then Gasol took center stage.  After missing a shot, he was complaining to the officials all the way down the court. He lost his man, who layed the ball in. I was pissed. That’s unacceptable. Now it’s a one point game. You could see Gasol mouth “my bad” on the bench.  Next time down the court, 30 seconds left, Taj hoisted up a long jumper that missed, when somebody dunked home the rebound and got fouled. Yep, instant gratification. Gasol made up for his mistake, and locked up the win for the Bulls. They’re playing pretty well too by the way.

Actually, it was Good Friday for all us Catholics throughout the world.  That Friday before Easter is an important day. Still can’t believe I haven’t made that procession down 18th, 2 blocks from where I grew up. Well, this Friday was good for one more reason.

My son turned 3 years old today.  What can I say about that, but wow. I told my wife that we actually helped raise a human 3 whole years.  He’s the best thing that my wife and I ever did together.  He is my mini me; my little bulls, Blackhawks, bears, and cubs fan; he knows the Sox too.   He celebrates with me, and lucky for him, he feels no pain when they lose.  It’s perfect. Win or lose, he goes about his business, playing basketball, baseball, or with some stuff… And I’m right there with him. It’s priceless really. I only wish I could freeze time and keep him at this age forever. I don’t know how it’s going to be from here on out…my rookie voyage as a Dad too, but it just seems like it can’t get any better.  Now, as it approaches 10:53 pm, we approach 3 years exactly. He’s sleeping like a baby now, after a fun filled birthday day.

So I didn’t go to work today, hawks in the playoffs, hawks and bulls pull out big Ws, Easter is around the corner, and my son turns 3.  Yeah, I think that qualifies. Only one more thing left, posting this blog… Oh yeah, and one more kiss on the forehead for the birthday boy. Today was a good day.

Captain Serious saves the day! 3 game winning goals this week…I’d say he is ready for playoff hockey! Hawks and Bulls both got much needed wins…seasons winding down and seeding all they are both playing for…finish strong!

Question on csn last night…who is Chicago’s clutchest athlete right now? My vote would have to be Toews…steps up his game when the Hawks need it most!
