April 29, 2018: An Early Impression

posted in: Cubs | 1

Boom!  How sweep it is.  The Brewers marched into Wrigley on an 8 game winning streak.  Now they’re leaving on a 4 game losing streak.  The Cubs are leaving an early impression on the team that is supposed to be presenting the biggest challenge in the division this year.  Seven out of eight thus far going to the Cubs in this matchup.  This latest series, the 4 game sweep, was impressive as hell.

The Cubs were the last team to have a starting pitcher get to the 7th inning; that’s not good.  There was a lot of talk about getting the starters deeper in the games, and not burning out our bullpen, like what seemed to happen last year.  So far this year, it had been more of the same.  That all changed this series.

Looking at the rotation, I felt pretty damn good about it.  Seeing what they did this weekend, validated that.  27 innings pitched by the starters in the series and ZERO earned runs allowed.  Yes, that’s not a typo.  Each one of the starters was doing their thing this weekend.  I believe Len said this was a Cubs record; allowing only 2 runs in a 4 game series.  That’s just mind blowing.

Hendricks was the first to get into the 7th.  Expecting big things from the professor this year.  Hoping to see him take his game to that 2016 playoff level.  Next was Darvish, who finally got through a 5th inning.  It was the same for all Cubs starters… that horrible 5th inning, but especially for Yu.  With a balk and a walk to the pitcher to start the 5th, he melted down in two consecutive games.  He got through it this time.  Next up was Quintana.  Yeah, who knows how Eloy will turn out, but I’m still really excited about Jose.  I think he is key to our success; he needs to fit that bill.  Finally, our #5 starter, Chatwood threw a gem on Sunday.  Beautiful stuff.

How about the bullpen?  They had something to say in this series as well.  Edwards has been lights out all year.  And how about first time closer Morrow?  Love the good morning, good afternoon, and good night strikeout of Braun to end Friday’s game.  He’s been doing a great job in the closer role.  Maybe the Cubs won’t need to acquire a closer at the deadline after all…

And don’t look now, but the 500 living Cubs are now 15-10.  Only the surprising Pirates sit in front of us on this 2nd to last day of April.  So much for that slow start.  The Cubs are getting it done, and I’m loving it.

Next up we welcome the Rockies.  Didn’t we just see them?  I wonder if there will be a little payback from the up and in pitch to Bryant.  The weather is finally warming up, and so are the Cubbies.  This is going to be a fun year.  Go Cubs!

Pretty impressive start to the season vs division rival brewcrew. The Cubs just sent them packing after a 4 game sWeep to make it 7 out of 8 vs them so far this season. You want to be the best brewcrew, you better beat the best, and that is the Cubs! The Cubs starting pitching was out of this world. The offense had its moments, but the Cubs have yet to put everything together…glad to be a few games above thus far. As the weather warms and guys settle in, I expect more series like this for the Cubs. GO CUBS GO!!!
