With my wife working last night, I was ready to actually sit down and watch the entire Cubs game as they started a series in Cincinnati. Well, at least try to watch it, as my 2 year old ran around the house. Then the rain came… and the game started off in a rain delay and eventually got postponed. I wasn’t upset when it was a rain delay, but was a little disappointed when it got cancelled. After all, rain delays can be a very enjoyable experience.
My first memory of a rain delay involves a trip to Wrigley Field with a van load of other kids from the Boys Club. I had to be about 8 years old. It was a blast. Although the game was delayed, us kids got to roam and chase each other around the ballpark. Back then, even a rain delay at home was OK, because they showed old baseball highlights during the rain delay. It could have been highlights of old Cub games, some general MLB highlights, or even a blooper reel. You didn’t mind sitting there while the actual game was delayed because you got to enjoy these vintage highlights. Now, they’ll just show a TV episode that’s from that network. Yesterday, it was a Tyler Perry show. Needless to say, that I did not sit there and watch that… that’s not cool old MLB highlights… that’s not fun.
Rain can be fun in any sport. I remember one Monday night “typhoon” I was working as a bus boy. And as the rain continued to pour, a couple inside the restaurant decided to skip the game, and offered me the tickets. I immediately asked the waitress if I could cut out and head to the game. When she told me I could, I didn’t hesitate calling a friend and picking him up… the rain didn’t slow us down one bit. After all, it was Bears-Packers Monday Night Football. It was the night that the jerseys of Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus were to be retired. I was there for that! Although the results of the game weren’t great as Edgar Bennett ran up and down the field on the Bears, it was still an unforgettable experience.

A couple memorable rain delays actually happened when I lived out in Los Angeles (where it never rains!). When my brother came out to visit me, we scooped up some tickets to an early season Dodgers-Giants game. The rain delay during that specific game just gave us more opportunity to stand around and BS. We also had the chance to drink some more beer of course. Nothing wrong with that! On a trip to San Francisco with my future wife, we were slated to make our first visit to AT&T Park (then called Pac Bell) for a pre-season Giants-A’s game. The weather was horrible, and my wife was sick, but we STILL went to the game. If you’ve never been there, you need to go. I got to see one of my favorite stadiums as I thanked my future wife for being a trooper since she didn’t “punk out” on me.
So back to last night’s rain delay, I immediately turned off the TV episode that was being shown, and made the best of it. This turned out to be a great night too, as my son and I enjoyed a sports filled evening. From playing “floor hockey” in our hallway with plastic golf clubs and golf ball, to playing basketball in the shower, we didn’t waste one second of this rain delayed game. And as we ended the night with me reading to him from one of his favorite books “And the Fans Roared”, which is compilation of sports broadcasts from over the years, I continued to teach him the important things, like how to say Walter Payton and Michael Jordan.
And at the end of the night, although the game did eventually get postponed, and I didn’t get to stay up late to watch the rain delayed game (another highlight!), it didn’t matter. Sometimes these rain delays happen for a reason. And hey, at least the Cubs didn’t lose last night!
