On Sunday, the Cubs entered their first extra inning game of the year in the series finale with the Diamondbacks. In the 15th inning, the Cubs came away with their first extra inning win of the year, and another series victory. It felt extra sweet.
Who doesn’t like extra innings? I see some people complaining about it. Seriously, how often do baseball games go to extra innings? And how long do they really last? My guess is a pretty low percentage Actually, a quick search tells me less than 10% of games go to extra innings, and out of those games, over 80% end by the 12th inning. So the Cubs may play 16 extra inning games, and only 4 of them will go past 12 innings. That still seems high. The Cubs need to pick up the pace in those extra inning games to make the average. I don’t mind it.
Sure, does it get hard to stay awake sometimes, as the game heads deep into the night, yes. But it’s extra baseball… free baseball. Nothing wrong with that. You even see some funky things sometimes, like guys pitching you never thought would pitch. If you’re lucky enough to be at the game, you’ll remember that game forever, whether you enjoyed the outcome or not. What would you rather have happen? A tie? Hell no.
Look, I like the way the NHL does it. They do the 3 on 3, then a shootout… until the playoffs, where you play until somebody scores. But what’s the MLB version of that? The NFL does the extra period of OT, with a twist about needing to score a TD first to end it. But if nobody scores, tie… that’s crap. The NBA will play until somebody wins; that’s cool. I still remember that 3OT game against the Nets in the playoffs. What could the MLB do if they were to change it? Put guys on 2nd base to start the inning?

Avoid taking viagra shops in india overdose; men suffering from kidney.I’d vote for no change. But I also think that there is no problem with the time of your average MLB game. You’re going to a baseball game, you know what you’re signing up for. You’re watching it, you know how long this game will last; you also have options to flip around during the game if need be. Still, sit back and enjoy; why does everybody have to be such in a damn hurry? But… if the pressure to change wins out, what should it look like?
I guess starting the runner at 2b wouldn’t be so bad. How about this: load the bases… put your next 3 guys up on base, and put 1 out up there. Do that back and forth until somebody scores. Maybe do it after the 12th inning. So let them settle it if they can in the first 3 extra innings, and then do something different? You’re only impacting 2.5% of games then; better than a tie. I’d be OK with that.
Whatever way this goes, at the end of the day, if your team wins, you’ll like it. If they lose, you’ll talk crap. Sunday in Arizona was perfect. Another win for the Cubs, that’s all that matters. Go Cubs!
