As Episode 3 of The Last Dance began, we knew from the previews, who would be a part of this dance. Yes, a new dance partner, dare I say, the original dance partner, the Detroit Pistons. Yes, I remember them well.
Actually this one centered around Dennis Rodman too, and his journey to the NBA and eventually to the Bulls. He is the prime example of a player who everyone hates unless they are on your team. I absolutely hated Rodman; I never thought I would end up loving him. But that is how this thing works at times. Players make it to one of my teams and thus, I must support them. Support is one thing; love is another. Yet the style of play that Dennis brought with him was very easy for us in Chicago to love. We appreciate the hard work, the dirty work, the hustle. We know that for every flashy player, for every superstar, there is a player that has to do the other stuff; Rodman was this guy. Yet, at the same time, Dennis was a superstar in his own right. One of the best rebounders of all time… loved how he talked about practicing his craft. Although all the F bombs in The Last Dance may not be ideal for my 8 year old, the constant reminder throughout the series thus far that practice & hard work lead to the results you are desiring; that is gold. But before Dennis made his way to Chicago, he was a Bad Boy…
I love how all the Pistons fans come out of the wood works now. Lots of people and teams getting attention due to this look at the Bulls. You have Isiah Thomas and Bill Laimbeer running their mouths… hilarious. If you think about it, we always talk about how the Bulls could have won another in 1999, and even the two years after Jordan’s first retirement; what if we were able to conquer that Piston mountain earlier? Title in 1989; title in 1990? Who knows, but what I do know, is that these battles with the Pistons helped galvanize the Bulls; this challenge helped bring out the best in MJ, Jackson, Pippen, and everybody else for that matter. I’ll never forget on my 8th grade graduation day, hurrying home to see Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 1990, only to see Pippen on the bench with an ice pack on his neck. The Bulls got their asses kicked; another year, another loss to Detroit. I hated them.

In the manner that we did it, sweeping them, ripping their hearts out, putting that team and its style of play in the rear view, so, so sweet. We were in Michigan that weekend; I asked my dad if I could hold a broom out the window on the ride back to Chicago. Of course the Pistons had to act like little bitches and walk off the court without shaking our hands; now they try to blame it on the Celtics, and “that’s the way it was” back then? BS… we saw true class from the ultimate competitor the previous two years, congratulating them when you know he was burning up inside. No excuses Pistons. I’m glad we ended that team.
Yeah, Bulls Pistons was one of the greatest rivalries in my lifetime. Finally beating your rival, climbing that mountain, is one of the sweetest things ever. Once we beat them, I felt like nothing would stop us; I was right. Episode 4 is next.
