April 26, 2019: Don’t Call it a Comeback

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

I had watched the start of the game on Friday night…another rough first inning for Hendricks. I swear if he could only get those first three outs. When I got back, I had missed the Bryant HR and another run from the Dbacks. I was just in time for the Javy bomb. That was long gone. Right before he hit it, I told my wife I still had a really good feeling about this game, then boom! Don’t call it a comeback.

Well, we know by now that didn’t quite work out. Yeah, the instant response to my prediction was pretty awesome, but that’s where it ended. Cubs would lose the opener in Arizona. Meanwhile, back at home in the other MLB stadium in the city, the Sox topped off an impressive comeback of their own. I saw the score early…it was a bloodbath, 9-2. Next time they mentioned it, it was a one run game. Then they walked it off. Tim Anderson of course. His reaction to this one was more than justified. Good for them.

I think back on comebacks from different seasons. Surely, after a comeback like that, you start to feel it. You start to believe in the impossible. You may even think this mojo is going to manifest itself in a World Series Title. Heck yeah, been there. The Cubs have had their share of comebacks over the years. The recent Braves game from last year comes to mind; it provided a teaching moment for my son to never give up. Then the Heyward slam to win it; that was an unexpected result sitting on the couch that night with my wife. Finally the Bote slam; I think we watched that like literally 100 times. Got to see it again in Cubs intros the other day; still love it. Those were all last year right? I don’t want to look shit up right now. Yeah, that season didn’t turn out with that title. All that mojo…

Well, it doesn’t always end that way. But it can. The great feelings brought by a comeback like that will last. They will carry over. The fact that these guys could do it…as long as these guys are together, it could happen. You have that confidence; the team has that confidence. World beaters baby. For us die hards who ride that roller coaster, it’s definitely one of those hills. Enjoy the hell out of it. We deserve it.

There’s a lot of feel good games during an 162 game stretch, some seasons more than others. We need to enjoy each of them. Because we know how we can be after one of those memorable losses. We know how that ruins the next day…until they take the field again, and try to get back in the win column. Yeah, it’s all too familiar. So when you win, and win like that, flip that bat wherever the hell you want to, and try to bottle up that mojo…and cash in on it, before it’s too late.
