I had been zoned in on this date for a while. With my son having a few days off after Easter, and with the Cubs playing at home on Tueaday night, we would have our only chance to attend a weeknight game before he gets out of school in June. We couldn’t wait that long to get to our first Cubs game; we couldn’t wait that long to set foot in Wrigley for the first time in 2019. Yep, scooped up two tickets; we were going back to the cathedral.
Turns out it was Game of Thrones night…big deal. I know I’m probably in the minority, but I haven’t watched one episode of that. Maybe a binge worthy show in the future, but not yet, not yet. Almost done with Shameless, Cobra Kai season two is out, then there’s a bunch of our other shows coming back soon… Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, Ozark, and eventually Peaky Blinders right? We did end up taking a picture with people dressed up as the characters. This was during our catch outside between the 2nd and 3rd inning. We saw the Rizzo bomb on the huge TV behind us. Playing catch is always a part of our trip to Wrigley nowadays.
We were in our seats for the first inning; we almost let them off the hook. After a Zobrist single, a Bryant walk, a Rizzo ground out, and a Baez walk, we had bases loaded with Schwarby up at bat. It was a great at bat. Count got to 3-2, the crowd rose to their feet. I was really hoping Kyle would bop one; he needed it. He didn’t. He struck out. Damn. That brought up Willson, and gave the Dodgers one out to get to escape the jam. Nope. Hard grounder right down the left field line, clearing the bases. Man did Baez fly around those bases. After a Descalso double, it was 4-0 Cubs. We never looked back.

Before playing catch, we stopped into one of the stores. It’s inevitable that my son will walk out with something. This time around it was the Cubs team pack of baseball cards. Glad he picked that. After playing catch, it was nacho time. I can’t believe how he scarfed those down with me. After that, more walking around. Thought we might end up in some other seats, but nope; after our journey around the stadium, we ended up back in our seats. We were behind the bleachers when the Dodgers were rallying in the 7th. My son got another baseball from one of the Cubs workers. My son asked him if it was real; he told him it was hit in the bleachers during BP. We wondered who it was. As we headed back, we were by the Dodgers dugout for the inning ending strikeout. Everybody went nuts. Then the stretch…one of the best parts of the game with my son. As we walked past home plate, and were passing by the Cubs dugout, we looked up to see Baez go deep; whoomp there it is! Our night in Wrigley ended with a rendition of Go Cubs Go; the night was complete. Well, after a couple of slices at D’Agostinos of course.
I know it’s only April, but it doesn’t get much better than this. I could probably write a couple chapters in a book about how special it is to go to a game with my son, at Wrigley, to watch the Cubs. But we only have time for this now. Time to keep it moving; there are anniversaries to celebrate. Go Cubs!
