Sure, I could focus on happier things, like Rizzo’s game tying HR on Friday night, which lead to another comeback win. Heck, I could even talk about Saturday’s slug fest, and another win for the Big Blue Machine. But no… I’m still trying to figure out this Hawks thing. I’m going to try to talk my way through it.
How did this happen? Not only was it the second first round exit in a row, it was the way it happened. End of an era some are saying… The championship window is closing. I’m not buying it. I was taking a closer look at the roster and salaries…
Toews and Kane are both locked in for 10.8M per year from here on out. I don’t think anybody wants to see either of these guys playing elsewhere, right? Right?!? I know Toews had a semi down year and was not very good in the postseason, but come on. He is our captain. If anybody will rededicate themselves to their craft, regardless of all the accomplishments already in the bank, it would be Toews; at least that’s what I believe. They really went after him in this series…a couple questionable non calls…but I’m not here to put some of the blame on the refs, although it’s tempting. But seriously, Kane and Toews are here to stay, hopefully.
Bowman said they will look at everything, and I agree that they should, but don think we will see any changes to these two members of the core. What about the top 2 defenders? You know, the two guys that wear the As on their sweaters. 6.8M for number 7 and 5.5M for number 2 for the next 6. They’re 32 and 33 years old respectively; older than the 28 year olds I first mentioned. Seabrook will be an easy target, but is the defense really to blame? Sure, the Preds were flying around; they seemed to be playing at a different speed. I’ll give that to them; I won’t concentrate on some of their goals being fluky. And yes, the puck clearing was horrendous. Don’t think either Campbell or Oduya will be back; don’t think they should be. So that leaves these two plus Hammer and TVR; adding some young defensemen should be a priority. I don’t think messing with the top four should.

That brings us to goalie. Crow at 32 will get 6M per the next three, while Darling at 28 will be gone. You ok with that? I definitely don’t blame Crow for what transpired. He is a top notch goalie; how good can Darling be? Trading Crow to get a top flight player while signing Darling for less doesn’t sound totally stupid, does it?
The one guy that sort of stands out is Hossa. At 38, he’s due 5.2M for the next 4; not sure what our options are here. He played awesome to start the season, but even with the rest we gave him late, he only had a few moments of note in the series. I think it’s safe to say he’s on the back side… I guess if there was one guy I had to pick from the core it would be him, but like I said, what could we do here?
That’s a quick look at some core concerns; I don’t think I’ve found the answer yet. Next time, we’ll continue to look at the roster, while we continue to try and figure out the reasons why the Hawks are already on vacation. I know the core should lead, but there needs to be more… Do we have enough after the core…enough dollars to pay the supporting cast…enough talent to complement them? Let’s take a closer look.

Bhawks done already? Still hard to believe. Pump the brakes on all that end of an era, dismantle the team, blah blah blah talk. The core is intact. Bhawks just did not get it done in the playoffs. Great regular season followed by 1st round sweep exit…sounds like the caps from years past. Enough blame to go around but not on any 1 player. So my following thoughts are based on money, age, and need.
I think seabs should go. I like him, has a hard shot, great defender, but seemed out of it for 3 of 4 playoff games. He is older and making a lot of money. Think the Bhawks can part ways and get younger on D and save money, too.
Crow is next. Nothing personal, but he is getting older, too. This is more about giving Darling a shot because he deserves it. Send Crow somewhere, get younger, save money, and make Darling #1.
Finally, I think big Hoss has to help the Bhawks out money wise or he is gone. He is 38 but still seems to have game. A great asset to have on the team but needs to restructure deal.
The Bhawks are and will be fine. 3 Cups in 8 years is nothing to start overreacting about. I think going with Darling, getting younger on D, acquiring a bruiser on O to cause havoc in the blue paint, and making sure the Bhawks can pick up someone to cpnsiatently win draws. The talent is there. Dont get crazy…start getting younger and tweaking.
