April 23, 2016: Not Done Yet

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

Maybe they’re just better…  That’s what I sent in a text message to my Dad and brother after Tarasenko scored to give the Blues a 3-1 first period lead in Game 6 at the UC.  5 unanswered goals later, it seems I may have spoken a bit too early.  The Blackhawks showed us that they are not done yet, as they roared back to force Game 7 in St. Louis on Monday night.

Down 3-1 in the series, the Hawks looked finished.  Down 3-1 in this game, the Hawks looked finished.  We should know better.  As I’ve said a number of times over the 2 years I’ve been doing this, you can’t count this Blackhawks team out until the final whistle of that 4th win for the opposing team.  That hasn’t happened yet.  It should be no surprise that this team has pushed themselves back in the series.  It should be no surprise that this team went down 2 games in a series, only to even it up.  Will they be able to finish the job?

If the pressure was off the Blackhawks after going down 3-1, and the weight of closing out these champions sat on the Blues shoulders in Game 5, imagine what that weight feels like now.  Now, the giant has awoken.  Now, the Blackhawks appear back.  Much respect to the Blues, but in Game 7, it would be hard not to like the Hawks, even if you weren’t from Chicago.

Aren’t the hockey playoffs great?  You look at the NBA playoffs, and there is blow out after blow out… a couple close games here and there.  In the NHL, it seems like most of them are nail biters.  This entire series definitely has been.  This feels more like a Western Conference Finals matchup then a first round one.  It’s ashamed that one of these teams will be going home after Monday’s tilt.  And that team is you St. Louis…

OK, let’s relax for just a second.  Let’s try not to let that confidence overflow, making us overconfident, making us vulnerable.  We’ve all seen that scenario play out before.  No, let’s keep that dog look in our eyes.  Let’s play like crazy this next 60 minutes.  Let’s fly around the ice.  Let’s really want it, and then go out and get it.  Nothing will be given to us.  Nothing will be easy.

That’s what they did in this one.  Getting that first goal was huge, before the Blues punched back again.  3 straight 1st period goals would follow, giving them that 2 goal advantage.  What was a great looking start turned into a scary situation; the UC sounded remarkably quiet.  I’m not sure what was said in that locker room between periods, but boy did the Hawks play their asses off from that point forward.

Anisimov with a beautiful goal.. that hand eye coordination is something.  TVR played his best game of the playoffs, and didn’t miss the nice feed from Toews.  Then it was the late season acquisition who would pay a dividend, when Weise found top shelf to give the Hawks the one goal lead.  And like that, the game was turned… this time for good.

The Blues made their run in the 3rd, but couldn’t get it past Crow.  The defense was better, turnovers were less.  And after a late penalty, the Blues appeared dead.  Then the power play began, and the Hawks didn’t seem like they were trying to score.  This made me nervous and pissed off.  Don’t take the foot of the gas boys.  Then Kane, the magician, had it behind the goal for what seemed like 30 seconds.  He flipped it in front, where Shaw found the back of the net.  The crowd erupted.  Gametime.  Hossa added on an empty netter for good measure, and the crowd saluted the Hawks as the clock ticked down.

No, the Blackhawks are not done yet…. and that better team, yeah, it hasn’t been determined yet either.  There won’t be much more suspense in this series, as it will end one way or another on Monday.  Wait… did I just say that?  Monday’s game is going to be a back and forth affair, with lead changes, great goals, great saves, and a fantastic finish; it will go down to that final whistle.  When that clock hits triple zeros, it might not be over yet, because OT may be in store… maybe 2.  Point is, this has been one hell of a series.  The Blues are a hell of a team.  The Blackhawks.. .yeah, they’re OK too.  When that winning team is decided on Monday night in Game 7, that team will truly deserve to be moving on; the loser, an unfair early exit.  With all the great postsason series played by the Hawks over the past 7 seasons, this one ranks up there.  How high it ranks will depend on that outcome that is still pending.  I can’t believe it… wait, yes I can… we are headed back to Game 7; the best game in all of sports.  GO Hawks!!!

What a series! Coming down to a game 7 seems appropriate but wrong that this is a first round matchup. Oh well, Hawks need to complete the comeback this evening. Home ice is not theirs, but momentum and experience is in their favor. The Hawks just won a game 7 in anaheim last year…smoked them, actually. I dont care how they do it tonight, but we all know anything can happen. Hopefully, it will not be a game 7 like vs the kings 2 years ago. Start hot and jump on the blues. Take the crowd out of it. Just Win, baby! GO HAWKS!!!

while it is great, and great tv, the Hawks are not the only game in town any more. chicago actually has 2 1st place baseball teams 3 weeks into the season!!!!! not sure if that’s a repeat of……ever! the cubs have outscored every other team to this point, and the pitching on both sides of town has become top notch. keep watching the Hawks, but check the cubs/sox out of the corner of your eye.
