So we flip back to the main Comcast channel, to see a scoreless 1st period thus far. That’s how that period would end. Crap, I need to walk the dog before the 2nd! Outside we go, back inside we rush. The 2nd period just started.
About 30 minutes removed from the no-hitter, I’m still pumped up. I’m thinking… the Blackhawks have to win now. What a downer it would be to see them get eliminated. To be devastated after being so, so happy with the no hitter. Talk about ups and downs, swings of emotion, all bottled up in a few hours. That would cause whiplash. They have to win, right?
Well, it was Mr. Short Handed as he’s known around these parts who started the scoring. The active NHL leader in short handed goals fired one past Elliot, and the Hawks claimed a 1-0 lead. Sitting on 499 regular season goals, that was Marion’s 50th playoff goal. Now it was a lock. Put that W on the board, because when Hossa scores in the postseason, we are 17-0! I can turn it off now.. haha.
Well that didn’t last long. Crow, who has been playing out of his mind, allowed an easy one to go by, less than a minute after the Hossa tally, and the score was tied. These Blues just battle right back. They don’t give up… we’d see another example in a bit.
But first Anisimov with his perfect positioning in front of the net, slammed a rebound home, and it was 2-1 Hawks. Then right before the end of the 2nd period, Kane slipped a perfect pass to Bread Man who fired it home. We have our Russians too! A 2 goal lead! When was the last time we had a 2 goal lead? 3-1 headed to the third.

This game is definitely in the bank now. With Crawford on top of his game, there is no way we give up this 2 goal lead; that didn’t mean we had to stop trying to score. It also didn’t mean just let them skate right into the zone, or continuously turn the puck over at the blue line, or continuously fail to clear the zone. It was driving me crazy! We were tempting fate, then it happened. Not once, but twice… and we were lucky it wasn’t more than that. The Blues had tied the game, and the Hawks had let another 3rd period lead slip away. Who is this team?
Well, I was thinking about that. On one hand, there is this young hungry team, trying to get over the hump, and advance deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs. A deep, skilled team with that never give up atttitude. Is this the series they finally do it? On the other hand, we have the Hawks… the defending champs, the 3 time Stanley Cup champs. We’ve been through it all. Adversity, check. Down in a series, check. Backs against the wall, check. Seemingly left for dead, like the entire OT period, check. There is nothing that this Blackhawks team can’t handle. They surely will come through and get this win. I knew they would… well, I was hoping they would. This has been a great series.
And it would continue… what a fricking play by Kane! After a phenomenal move that left a defender scrambling on the ice, and after his initial shot was blocked, Kane flew around the net to tap in his own rebound. Big time players make big time plays. It was the perfect time for Kane’s first goal of the postseason… his 5th OT Playoff game winner. With that clutch gene existing in more than one of our Hawks, it was bound to happen… it needs to happen at least two more times.
That’s the thing. I was thrilled… well, actually half awake thrilled, when Kane put in the game winner. Yet, that’s only the first leg of this trifecta. With a series so close, not only postseason, but regular season… with all these games coming down to 1 goal, these games could go either way. Will this be the Blackhawks trademark win in another successful postseason, or was this the last gasp for the defending champs trying to fend off these up and comers?
I may be in the house on Saturday night. If so, it would be my first Blackhawks playoff game. If not, we’ll be locked and loaded at the house. This Blackhawks win which followed Jake’s no hitter made for one of the most memorable nights in Chicago sports history. Besides of course the title clinchers over the years, this has to rank up there. Maybe a list? Maybe we still have some unfinished business to talk about this year. Maybe the other player with that clutch gene will come through at the UC on Saturday night. Maybe we’ll need to find one more guy for Game 7. Maybe they got the wake up call they seemingly need from time to time. Maybe, just maybe, the Hawks still have some left in the tank. Maybe we can top this night… I can’t wait to find out.

Hossa, anisimov, panarin…up 3-1 with Crow playing like a mad man. Who would have thought the Hawks give up that lead? Kaner comes thru when we needed him the most! Awesome game 5 victory with some impressive game 6 and elimination game stats for the Hawks…back at the UC with a chance to force game 7…GO HAWKS!!!
