April 22, 2015: Fighting It

posted in: Blackhawks, Cubs | 0

How many of us were fighting it last night?  How many of us were able to stay up until the end of the Hawks 3OT Game 4 winner?  I’m not going to fake the funk… I was out in the 1st OT.

I couldn’t even fight it.  If if was the Stanley Cup Finals, or if it was a Game  7, or if the Hawks were on the brink of winning/losing a series, maybe I would have tried harder.  Bravo for those of you who DID stay up.  With a cold morning to greet your tired self today, it was a good thing that they did win.  It was all worth it.  Or, in my case, you can be well rested and enjoy the Hawks victory.  However, to stay up, and see every minute of that marathon victory, deserves credit.

I couldn’t even stay on the game in the 1st period.  I watched the pre-game, which was especially cool because they showed the entire pregame festivities in the United Center.  I haven’t been to a game this year, so it was cool to see the new intros, etc.  Then of course the anthem… I always try to catch that.  But when Duncan Keith was put through the glass in the 1st period, the flipping began.  The previous channel was the Cubs Pirates game, and I’m glad I flipped.

I was watching the game before the Hawks stuff started.  It was a back and forth battle.  The Cubs were up then down, then caught up, then were down again.  They were down 8-5 heading into the 8th before Wellington went deep; he’s been playing his ass off so far this year.  Not bad for a 3rd catcher…  So 8-6 headed to the 9th.  A Rizzo single and Soler double put the first 2 runners on 2nd and 3rd; this is where I picked it up.  Kris Bryant was next, and he worked a walk.  The kid is money.  Out of all the highly touted prospects that ever came up with the Cubs… out of all the highly touted prospects of this newest regime… this kid looks like a can’t miss.  Only a few games in, but I’m impressed.  So bases loaded with nobody out, and Starlin to the plate.  Here’s another guy who has been having a great start to the season.  A bouncer off the plate into left field tied the game; Bryant scored on a groundout later in the inning.  Cubs win 9-8.

Between batters, I flipped back and saw a 1-0 deficit…. then a 1-1 tie, and caught the replay of the Vermette goal.  Then it was time for someone to take his Blackhawks jersey off; my son needed to go to bed.  Missed the whole 2nd period, but got a text talking about the Bickell hit on Ribiero.  I had to rewind the game to check that hit; I wish there was a better angle, but glad Ribiero got smashed.  I was finally settled in to watch the entire 3rd period after catching up on the game during the 2nd intermission.  That 2nd Nashville goal should have never happened, but… the Hawks were down 2-1 to start the period.

Once Saad fired it past Rinne, I called OT; I wish I hadn’t.  The Hawks had a flurry late, but it went to OT.  Time to take this from the couch to the bed for OT; I guess that was my first mistake.  OT was kind of a blur, and then I turned the TV off.  Text messages after 1am told me what I wanted to hear; a big win for the Hawks, keeping the foot on the throat, heading back to Nashville for the clincher.  Big, Win.

We get an off day today between the Bulls and Hawks series; maybe a look at the Bears schedule tomorrow???  Until then, stay up, take a nap, go to bed early, and catch up on that sleep.  One more thing… a Happy Birthday wish on this 22nd of April goes out to my now 6 year old niece; I can’t believe how those years have flown.  Enjoy that big day at school!
