April 20, 2021: Third Wheel

Well, I was wrong.  The series between the Blackhawks and Predators may NOT decide a playoff spot.  Yep, there’s another participant in that party.  The Stars have become that third wheel in the chase for the final playoff spot in the division.  As if we didn’t have enough to worry about…

Speaking about wheels, the wheels fell off for the Blackhawks on Monday night against Nashville.  It was a one goal game heading into the 3rd period; not a horrible position to be in.  But then, bam, bam… before I was able to sit in front of the TV to watch the 3rd, the Preds had scored two goals in the first minute; game over.  The Predators are now 6-0 vs the Hawks this year.

Obviously, that will have to change if the Blackhawks want to make the playoffs; our next chance is Wednesday, and then again on Friday.  I don’t think I’m going out on a limb when I say those are MUST wins.  However, the thing is, even if we did win both of those games, now we have the Stars in the mix.  This isn’t feeling good.

Heading into Wednesday’s schedule, it’s the Preds at 51 points and 47 games played, the Stars with 50 points and 45 games played, and the Hawks with 47 points and 46 games played.  The Stars still have a couple games against the Red Wings; that’s not good. Although their last two games are in the UC against us… will that decide the last playoff spot? Not if we can’t beat Nashville…

Monday night brought a season’s first for Colliton and the Blackhawks. It was the first time he pulled a goalie. My first thought is that’s not good. I like the fact that you stick to your guns; you give guys a chance to recover from a bad start. You don’t want to shake their confidence maybe. But here’s the deal: sometimes it just isn’t your day. When that’s the case in the NHL, for a goalie, you need to make the switch; this is not an abnormal thing. It’s not a shot against your coaching, your decision to start that goalie that night; it’s just something that happens. The coach needs to be able to make the change, whatever that may be, for the better of the team THAT night. We’ve seen a goalie get pulled that sparked the team, like against these same Preds back in the playoffs, when Crow was pulled for Darling. Not only did it benefit the team that game, it did NOT effect Crow long term… or maybe it did. I guess what I’m saying is that it wasn’t viewed as a negative thing long term; Crow came back and was great that playoff year. It was a win win. It doesn’t always work out that way, but it’s hard for me to believe that this was the first time the goalie needed to be pulled… I don’t wish for bad performances by our goalies, but I do hope Jeremy is more comfortable doing this going forward.

Who will it be in net on Wednesday? I imagine Lankinen again. Whoever it is, it’s must win time; I hate throwing that term around, but as the games becomes less, and the deficit grows, and you’re playing one of those teams directly in front of you… it’s time. Go Hawks!
