Welp, that didn’t last long. At least the Cubs were undefeated for one game… I mean, they didn’t even make it out of the first half of the first inning even, as the Pirates jumped out to an early 2-0 game. Thank God I don’t get too excited for Opening Day… that’s a joke. All that anticipation, all that excitement, and bam… that was the sound of the Cubs hitting the ground with a thud after losing to the hapless Pirates in the first game of the year at Wrigley on Thursday.
Maybe THIS was an April Fools’ joke? Certainly this isn’t a preview of what’s to come, right? The Pirates aren’t going to win a whole lot of games, although I know they’ll win more than last year… pretty much every team will right? The only reason I know about the Pirates lineup is because I play fantasy baseball. It’s a lineup of true no-names. I’m sure the casual baseball fan could barely name a guy on that roster… how about the manager’s name? I didn’t think so. And the Cubs… they’re not going to be THIS bad this year, right? Wow… that was a slow, painful extraction of excitement through this marathon opener; I got a late shot of hope when Sogard doubled into the corner late, but it was all for naught. Yep, the Cubs went from undefeated to winless real quick.
It started early, as I mentioned. I’ll start with the first pitch that Hendricks threw… a ball! Yeah, exactly. Actually, it looked like a good pitch, but was called a ball, which kind of was a symbol of today for not only Kyle but the entire Cubs pitching staff. Walks! One of those things that is the most frustrating when watching the Cubs is when their pitchers walk a lot of guys; they wasted no time doing that. If Hendricks is walking guys, you know something ain’t right. I’m not necessarily worried about him, but the rest of the guys… I sure hope those early walks are no indication of what’s to come this year. And then we had the lack of offense; all of our runs coming on sacrifice flies? Yep. And it wasn’t enough; the Pirates won 5-3.

My wife asked what I thought; how did I feel. I said it’s only one game. She responded with, yeah, but if they won, you’d be going crazy. Well, yes, she does have a good point… and yes, ok, this loss may hurt a bit more than your normal one, just as this first game means a little more… at least it feels like it does. But I responded with either it’s a fluke, or this is going to be a rough year; I hoped it was the former. Yeah, I took my Cubs jersey off after the game and hung it back up; I’ll be grabbing one of them again soon. It was a bust of an Opening Day.
I’m not going to dwell on it though, although the quicker the Cubs win a game, the better. They’ll get their next shot on Saturday. I sure hope they get their first win before I get to see them in person. Go Cubs.
