I was going to come up with a more original title, but it’s not necessary. It’s a simple fact, only three words: baseball is back. Those three words are music to my ears.
Every year is the same; every year except this year. Every year we think this could be the year; I guess that thought alone isn’t different. The fact that last year WAS the year is what I’m getting at. How does that change things?
Well, that smile on my face when the first game starts is a little bigger. That emptiness in my heart is no longer. That bucket list item has been checked off. I’m still cheering as hard as ever. I still hate the Cardinals.
I’m ready for the honeymoon. The stressful part is in the bank. The emotional roller coaster ended on the highest possible note. Now I’m ready to really enjoy my team.
My team that is the defending World Series champions. Yeah, roll out as many trophies as you want St. Louis, just tell me which one of those says 2016. I’ll wait. And since you wanted to remind everybody how many titles you have, why don’t you remind your own damn team, celebrating on the field like you just won one. After all, you guys did come in with more rest than us…about a month more.
Yeah, baseball is back. And no, I’m not worried about being a jag off Cubs fan now that we’ve won. If anybody deserves to enjoy this, it’s us. So excuse us if we act a little jerky. If you think we’re going to be bad now, just wait until we win this year.

Yeah, winning finally brings a little confidence. Cockiness? Nah…ok, maybe a little. More confidence than anything though. Seeing it finally happen, makes me think we can do it again. It can’t be harder than the first time.
Yeah, I know the history. Not since the Yankees almost 20 years ago has a team repeated. Not since the Big Red Machine has a national league team did it. Yeah, it was also 108 years since we won, and that’s in the rear view. We climbed the mountain. We looked at that pressure right in the face, took its best shot, and stood tall; our team finally came out on top. I seem to be saying finally a lot…
Opening night brought an ace performance by the opposing pitcher along with another “we never quit” moment. Oh yeah, and there was a little rain; the title could have been little rain, little magic. But there was no delay, no speech, no need. It was an opening day loss; only 161 more to go.
So do you think that one title will change us all? The answer is not a clear cut one. Yes, it has changed things; it’s changed everything. But I do believe this too: the more things change the more they stay the same. Do you think we’ll be any less rabid a fan base?
Baseball is back. I had to watch the opener. I’ll watch the home opener too. Then there will be some games that I go too, and a whole lot more that I will be keeping an eye on. It’s a long, glorious season. The best.
Yes, the Cubs are the best. Enjoy it. Savor it. It’ll be a season like no other, and it’s only just begun. Go Cubs Go!

Baseball is back is a fitting title. While we still hope that this will be the year, it has taken on a whole new meaning. 2016 was THE year for the Cubs as they finally won it all and are the World Series Champs. 2017 can be the year to defend and repeat as champs. How sWeet would that be? No doubt about it, the Cubs are stacked again this year. Yes, there are always things to worry about to go along with all of the “ifs,” but the Cubs are still set to do big things. With all of the experience gained last year for this young, talented club, the Cubs should be poised to make a run at repeating.
Yes, the red turds ruined the Cubs season opener and celebrated like they had won something more than their first game of the year. Yes, the Cubs are 0-1…let the panic begin. Yes, a solid starter shut them down and rendered the offense non-existent. But you know what? Who cares. Baseball is back. The defending champion Chicago Cubs are back. Let the 2017 roller coaster begin with the ultimate goal of reaching the summit once again in reach. Relish the target on your backs, and we fans will savor each W and bounce back from any l’s with our never ending supply of hope that this might be the year to repeat. Like a shirt I just picked up said, “just do it…AGAIN!”
GO CUBS GO!!!
