We’re sitting about a week away from the NFL draft. Some of the commercials/lead ins on the radio, are calling this one of the biggest drafts in Chicago Bears history; too much? I don’t think so. Once the dust settles, years from now, when we find out how good the players we take next weekend are, when we see the results on the field, if those results include Super Bowls, if players taken next weekend are big contributors to that… yeah, we may look back at the 2023 Draft, and say, yes, this WAS one of the biggest drafts in history.
Where are the Bears going with their first round pick? This is the biggest question out there, the question that you can actually bet on… go figure. Per the Draft Kings odds, the Bears will be choosing an offensive lineman; I’d be perfectly fine with that. Hitting the trenches hard, on both sides of the ball, should be the main theme throughout the draft in my opinion. Is that it though? What about all the other positions of need, we all know there are plenty.
I’ve heard the running back from Texas thrown out there, referred to as a generational talent. There was the #1 WR in many folks’ opinion, that Jaxon guy, being compare to Cooper Kupp. Normally, with so many needs, you wouldn’t necessarily look at the RB or WR position, however, if there is a guy that could be that perennial All-Pro sitting on the board when #9 rolls around… how do you know that guy will be THAT guy? Not easy. Thinking about putting an all-pro RB and/or WR on this team, coupling them with Justin Fields… that’s fun. A Bears offense that will cause havoc throughout the NFL… you do need an OL to make that happen though…
What about Jalen Carter? The guy that was clearly the #1 overall pick, is dropping, due to the accident, and the shape he showed up to the combine in… what if he’s there at #9? I’ve flip flopped on that one in my head, from hell no, to I think so, and finally, to this second… pass. Folks have said the DL position is the deepest in the draft, which is perfect for us, and the exact reason to NOT reach for one. Would it be reaching to take Carter at #9? Almost feels like a stud has fallen in our lap, but… what if he busts out? You can ask that question about everybody. There is no sure thing.
At the very minimum, I don’t want to scream at the TV after the Bears make their first selection next Thursday. They can hit it down the fairway, take the best available offensive lineman, and I’ll be fine. They can decide to go with the best DL available; I wouldn’t be upset. If they took a swing for the fences, and went for that RB or WR… fingers crossed man. Oh yeah, what about the best CB in the draft? Can always use those, especially if Jaylon Johnson will be sent packing a la Roquan Smith. Even one of them… So which selection WOULD make me scream? I’ll let you know when it happens… Having Shea McClellin and Mitch Trubisky flashbacks… Come on Poles; don’t F this up… please. Bear Down!
