11 months ago, Yu Darvish won a game; on Monday night against the Marlins, it happened again. Yay!!??
It was the hapless Marlins after all… he was on the ropes in the first inning… he did walk a bunch of guys… he hit a guy that made it on all the highlight reels since it ricocheted and hit the ump and the catcher too… he was still pulled too early… but getting the win was still a good thing. Hey, he owes us OK. After last year’s debacle… Grant it, it was a legit injury. OK, so chalk it up, fine. He’s healthy now, right? And it took until now to get his first win. Hopefully the first of many? I sure hope so.
Of course it had to happen during the week I’m playing against him in fantasy; that’s OK though. If he could win another game this week, which would hurt me fantasy wise, I don’t care. Of course I had the Marlins pitcher in this one too; double whammy! Like the Cubs, Yu needs to start stacking them up. He needs to start showing us why we paid him all this money. He was still throwing high 90s when Joe pulled him last night; that is certainly a positive sign. I just wish they’d stop handling him with kid gloves; at least that’s the impression I get. He’s a big boy. He’s making a boat load of money. Let him throw out there. He had a whole year to rest due to his injury. He should be raring to go. But because of this handling, and his apparent fragile psyche, I worry.

I hope he is strong willed; I hope the caution with handling goes away for the most part. I want to see him pitch through jams. I want to see him pitch long into games. I want to see him win close games against division rivals. I want him to stay healthy. I want to see the Yu we thought we were getting at the start of last year. I need to start seeing that now, so I can have faith in him later. He needs to enter Joe’s circle of trust now, so that Joe will trust him come October. I know… long way away, and heck, maybe the Cubs don’t make the playoffs, but you get my point right?
The win against the Marlins is a good place to start. It’s about damn time if you ask me. I still don’t have a lot of faith in Yu. He needs to show us why we can believe in him. He needs to have a positive impact on this team. He needs to show us why he’s worth all that dough. In reality, he doesn’t need to do a damn thing. He can ride into the sunset and go down as one of the biggest busts in Cubs history. I don’t want the story to end that way. Still plenty of chapters to write. Grab a pen Yu, and go, go, go. Go Cubs!
