April 13, 2021: On the Brighter Side…

On the brighter side… how about them Blackhawks? Here’s a team that I expected nothing from this year, and see how they are rewarding us? OK, ok.. it’s not a cinch that they’ll be in the playoffs, and they don’t have the benefit of the back door entrance provided by the NBA, but as of today, they sit 2 points out of the final playoff spot in the newly designed 2021 covid special Central division with 13 games left to play. Let’s do this!

It’s been a while since we talked Hawks, so let’s do a quick update. The last time we chatted about them, we were showing our remote control skills, trying to watch the Bulls, Cubs, and Blackhawks at the same time; the Blackhawks won that night 4-2 against the Stars. They followed up with a 5-1 loss to the Stars; I don’t know what the heck happened there. It was 1-1 when I checked… the next thing you know, boom, 5-1. OK, keep it moving. On to Columbus, where the Blackhawks won both games, including one in OT fashion on Monday night; those were some much needed points. It brought us right behind the Predators for that final playoff spot. With Nashville playing Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, we should have still been in that same spot… except those bastard Lightning decided to start their backup goalie. Welp, 4 points behind now… But have no fear, 2 winnable games with the Red Wings in Detroit are on tap Thursday and Saturday.

Let’s take a peek at the rest of the schedule after that; next week will be critical in deciding the fate of the Blackhawks. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday against the Predators; yep, the time is now. We need to win 2 out of 3 there if we want a chance, especially when you take a peek at the next 5 games: 2 against the Panthers and 3 against the Hurricanes. We end the season with 2 vs the Stars at the UC. Doable? Maybe.

Unlike the frustration with the Bulls, because of the higher expectations this year, it feels like it’s all gravy with the Blackhawks. Sure, do I think making the playoffs regardless of the result is an important step for this young Hawks team, same concept as the Bulls, yes… yes, it would be a great thing. Did I expect it to happen? No, heck no, but just like when Ricobene’s showed up 30 minutes early with my breaded steak sandwich, I’m not going to be upset if it does happen. That’s the funny thing about expectations I guess… you know under promise, over deliver type stuff; it’s real… it works… use it.

Last thing before we step away from the Hawks until later this week; what’s up with Toews? The way I see it, it’s not even being nosy; it’s not even about talking crap, like where the heck have you been all year. It’s more about is the guy OK. He’s our Captain… 3 time Cup winner… Jonny Serious… he’s been nothing but awesome here in Chicago; we’re concerned about him. Sure, there will be some assholes, and at the end of the day, is his health (assuming it’s his health issue) our business, no, but… rooting for the Blackhawks IS our business, and he’s a big part. Whatever though… at the end of the day, just hope he’s OK; just hope we get to see him skate for us again. It would be nice if he just showed up one day, and said “I’m Back”, and help lead the Hawks into the playoffs. Again, not expecting it, but what a nice surprise that would be. Go Hawks!
