April 13, 2017: Go Time

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

Set my alarm at 5:22am this morning.  I needed some extra time.  It’s the start of Blackhawks playoff season, and it was time to shave.  It’s one of the best times of the year.

I hate shaving.  So this is perfect.  It didn’t get too long last year, but the year before…  I had to trim it so that customers didn’t think there was a homeless guy working at my job.  I hope I’ll have to manicure it a bit this year; I’m ready for a nice long playoff run… the longest variety.

It started last night, after the Cubs game finished.  I actually turned on a hockey game that was NOT the Blackhawks.  There is only one explanation; the playoffs have started.  I saw Parise tie it late for the Wild against the Blues to send it to OT; there was no way I was staying up until this one finished.  But there it was… my first taste.

Tonight begins the main course.  Our number one seed Hawks open at the UC in Game 1 against the Preds.  I’m so happy it’s finally here.  Didn’t really pay much attention to the last few games of the season, just hoping that the Hawks got that record breaking road win.  It didn’t happen; that’s OK.  Finishing with the 2nd best point total in franchise history will have to do; there’s one important thing left.

They say it doesn’t mean a thing without the ring.  How about a slogan like that for the Cup?  You best shut up, if you don’t win the Cup.

It’s the Blackhawks, and if there is any team I have supreme confidence in, in these situations, it’s them.  It’s like the 85 Bears; we knew.  Jordan in the 90s was our ace in the hole.  After finally winning last year, I think I will feel that same type of confidence with the Cubs going forward.  The Hawks… yeah, ever since they broke through in 2010, the year they had their highest regular season point total ever, the confidence grew.  Still, we are still fans, and we still do worry.

I worry about the Hawks not keeping their foot on the gas at all times in a playoff series.  I worry about them digging themselves a hole, which makes it that much more difficult to win a playoff series.  It’s hard as it is… period.  Regardless of the history with the Preds, meeting and beating them in the first round of the 2010 & 2015 Cup years, this series will be a dog fight.  I’m not sure who you would have rather faced in the first round if you were looking for the easiest matchup… but I guess my point is, that none of them are easy.  This will not be either.

So, even though I have that confidence, that regardless of going down 1-0, 2-0, 3-1, even 3-0 in a series, I still think the Hawks could do it, I don’t want to be in that situation.  History tells us that in every Cup run there is a defining “on the brink” moment.  In 2010, it was this Predators series, and that Game 5 at the UC.  In 2013, it was going down 3-1 to the Wings.  In 2015, the Ducks series was like walking the tight rope.  Those were the brinks that we conquered…  In 2011, going down 3-0 to the Canucks in the first round was one that we could NOT overcome; we made it interesting, but couldn’t finish the job.  In 2012, it was 5 straight OT games vs the Coyotes before we bowed out 4-0 in Game 6.  In 2014, the worst one in my opinion, was being unable to dig ourselves out of the 3-1 hole vs the Kings.  Last year, it was another 3-1 deficit that we put ourselves in, just coming up short again.

We know they can do it.  They know they can do it.  Stay focused.  Play your best hockey at all times, and it will happen.  I will take our best against anybody else’s best every day of the week.  I just want to see the Hawks play their best hockey from the start to finish in each series, and that begins tonight.  It’s go time!  Let’s Go Hawks!!!

another “D” ‘mishap’ leads to the only goal needed by the preds! somehow, Q needs to get on the D to play the whole game. as a team, a little slow out of the gate, and never really recovered enough to get to pekker rinne.

Bhawks are the top seed in the west and in position to make another long run for the Cup. Yes, we have so much confidence in them. They have been here and done it all…multiple times. We never think they are outmatched or done in a series, no matter how deep a hole they dig themselves. Is this cockiness or just a supreme level of confidence in this team? Maybe a little of both. Either way, the regular season is done. They did what they had to do…home ice throughout the west. Time to go out and prove it…new year, new Cup run. Start strong, play hard, dont give the preds any ray of hope. Playoff season is here…Im ready, are the Bhawks? I sure hope so! GO HAWKS!!!
