April 12, 2017: Ring Thing

posted in: Cubs | 1

I liked it better than the banner raising… this ring thing.  The banner raising was nice, don’t get me wrong.  I was the proudest Cub fan ever that night, watching that 2016 World Series banner go up.  Finally, we were able to put up the other 2 World Series banners as well; didn’t make sense to have a big ceremony for something that happened that long ago, until it happened again… and it did.  Yeah, watching the players walk up into the bleachers, and out from the bullpen in the outfield with the trophy was really cool; the ring ceremony Wednesday night was better.

I don’t know exactly what it was… why I liked it better.  The rings were impressive, with fittingly 108 diamonds, and a value of 70K for the most expensive rings given out.  That was another cool thing; that they gave out rings to so many of the people involved with the team’s success.  That’s Ricketts staying classy, and why not… The money was pouring in before they won it all, and now… he could be like Scrooge McDuck swimming around in his riches.  It’s nice to see him spread that around a bit.

Another cool thing was that the fans presented the rings to the players.  I can’t believe I didn’t know about this; I would have certainly entered that contest.  Still, for die hard fans, which I hope most of them were, to stand on the field, at this historic moment, and present the championship rings… chills galore.  It was nice to see Theo and crew too.  They really weren’t a part of that banner raising ceremony; I thought for sure somebody would say a few words, and thought that would be him.  Theo, Jed, and Jason, the big three if you may, were suited up, and now, blinged up… rightfully so.

I think my favorite part was the ex-players getting the rings.  Fergie, Ryno, and Billy all marched out there to get presented with their rings.  At that point, I starting getting a little emotional, thinking about Ernie and Ron.  I told my wife only if they were here to see this…  It’s just like we can say for all those family members and friends that supported the Cubs their whole lives without seeing this… wishing they were here to see it.  Then, Len announced that Ernie Banks and Ron Santo WOULD get rings, and they would be on display.  That made me very happy.  I still would have loved to see them walk on that field to get those in person, but I’m pretty sure they had a good view of the evening from where they’re sitting.  You know, not only did they play a big role in the history of the Cubs, but in the negotiation of the greatest rain delay of all time last November 2nd also.

Yep, it’s a very good time to be a Cubs fan.  Pride & happiness are at an all time high.  Although we will never stop celebrating the 2016 Cubs, I think this ring ceremony officially turns the page to 2017.  With the celebrations in the books, it’s time to zone in on getting another.

So now it’s time to give the Cubs a break.  No, I won’t stop watching them, but the blogs for them will be coming less for a while… I think.  The Bulls clinched the playoffs by beating the D league Nets; that’s a blog for another day.  They get number one seed Boston in the 1st round of the playoffs starting Sunday.  But now it’s time to focus on OUR number one seed; the Blackhawks will take on the Predators in Game 1 on Thursday night.  Let’s get ready for that.  Let’s zone in on our next best chance at a championship.  I’m always ready for that.

What a celebration for Cub nation! Both the banner and ring ceremonies were firsts for this organization, and they did them right. They were aWesome! I did get more emotional during the ring ceremony. How could you not? In addition to the obvious players and organization heads, the 3 Cub legends got one as well as 2 legends no longer with us. Plus, fans got to present the rings to each player…how cool was that! A fitting 2 night celebration to put the finishing touches on 2016, the year of the Cubs! We will bask in this glory forever but time to concentrate on 2017. The Cubs are defending champs…enjoy these rings and go get more this year! GO CUBS GO!!!
