April 11, 2015: Vacation Sports

Vacations are great to get away, but some things, you just can´t escape.  Sports, if you didn´t already know, is a big part of my life.  It is involved at so many levels, including on vacation.

I had to come prepared.  I wanted to make sure there were plenty of options for me and my son´s play time; like there wouldn´t be enough at the resort itself.  I was in charge of packing the “toy” bag.  I filled it with his favorite books, cars, monster trucks, dinosaurs, a newly purchased Bull, and of course, some sporting equipment.  One of his favorites is a net that we use to play basketball with.  This is my son´s favorite sport.  The net is actually like one of those insect catching nets.  I hold it about 4 feet high, and he slams or shoots the basketball into the net, over, and over, and over.  This has been our go-to activity in our room.  I also packed his little baseball, bat, and glove; surprisingly this has not made it out of the bag.  The net has been plenty, after all, he´s been getting run ragged all day long.

The pool and beach have been the main locations for our sporting events.  It took him a couple days to get in his groove at the pool, which is surprising considering he goes every week, but he got there.  Practicing swimming, and putting his face in the water while doing so, back and forth between me and mom, has been his choice event.  He has also discovered the floating objects in the pool, and thankfully one has NOT been a Baby Ruth bar.  The floating bed, and inflatable devices, have been thoroughly enjoyed.  He got this relaxing thing down pat too.  Mix in some horseback rides in the pool, and a whirlpool made by swimming around and around in a jet pool, and it´s been non stop fun.  Then came the tennis ball today… oh yeah, that led to hours of entertainment.  Even the older kids, and even guys, in the pool throw a ball around… sometimes jumping off the edge to catch it… sometimes making that difficult throw which could lead to a surprise for some innocent bystander.  We just never grow out of playing our games, whatever they may be.

The last couple days, soccer has made it into the routine.  With 2 soccer nets setup on the beach, and a courtesy soccer ball at our disposal, the game is on.  He blasts the ball with his big left footed kick through the goal repeatedly.  When I try to steal or block the shot, or shoot the ball into the goal myself, he gets upset.  We played with a few other people, and I tried to tell him he needed to pass the ball… except every time he got it, he went straight for the net.  He learned eventually, but his desire to put that ball in the net was something to see.  We had a blast running barefooted on the beach kicking that soccer ball around.

I´m glad we´ve been keeping busy, because I haven´t been doing a damn thing.  I proclaimed this trip would be perfect to get some workouts in; something else that is hard to find time for in a regular schedule.  I thought I´d hit the gym, or take some jogs…. nope, zip, zero, nada.  Although walking up 2 flights of steps with my son on my shoulders has to count for something, right?

I love how sports is a constant in my life.  From cheering on my teams, to playing anything and everything with my son, it´s always a sports filled day.  We´ve even found some vacation sports to help relax.  That´s a great thing.
