April 10, 2017: Golden Era

It wasn’t just any normal Cubs home opener…  Normally, I would wear a Cubs jersey to work.  Normally, I would be excited, ready for hope to spring eternal for our Cubbies.  Ready for another potential, this could finally be the year. That’s how it’s been for every Cubs home opener that I can remember.  That’s not how it was for the 2017 Opener.

No, we have been waiting for this day a little bit more than normal.  The last time we saw our Cubs play in Wrigley, they were on the brink of elimination in the World Series.  Down 3 games to 1, they took the field needing to win 3 straight to end the drought.  Game 5 was the second most nervous I was all postseason.  The Cubs won that final Wrigley appearance in 2016, and as we will never forget, completed the comeback a few nights later in Cleveland.  They had done it, and tonight, we officially welcomed home our champions.

I debated taking off the day.  Maybe I’d watch highlights all day long. Maybe I’d drive over to Wrigley just because.  Maybe today is the final celebration of our 2016 Champions; no, definitely not that.  Besides the ring ceremony that is scheduled on Wednesday night, this team will be celebrated forever.  That party will never stop; that party has hopefully just begun.

Yes, what I’ve been saying is this:  we are entering the Golden Era of Cubs baseball.  Finally raising that banner, along with the other two World Series banners, and the NL pennant from last year, we witnessed something we’ve only ever dreamed about.  Seeing the Cubs walk out from the right field wall, with the World Series trophy, reminded me of a video game promotion some years back; we were led to believe that was the closest we’d ever get.  They were wrong.  We were right.

Our everlasting faith, our constant hope, our belief that one day, one day in our lifetime, we would see the Cubs win the World Series finally paid off.  And no, hell didn’t freeze over, at least that I know of.  The rain delay before our ceremony today…  I didn’t mind.  As I told another Cubs fan, I have a new appreciation for rain nowadays.

And as the game rolls on, I watch the Cubs get out of a no out bases loaded jam.  That’s Cub?  I guess that’s the new “thing”.  Now has everything we’ve been accustomed to over the years with our Cubs been flipped?  That’s Cub would have meant choking in a big game, or blowing a big lead.  Now, it’s winning a World Series, and getting out of a impossible situation with no damage.  Who are these guys?  These are our guys.  These are the Cubs.

Yes, and it feels so good.  If you’re tired of hearing about it, you’ve come to the wrong place.  If you thought I was Uncle Rico bad about the 85 Bears, the 90s Bulls, the 00s Hawks, just wait.  This will never get old.  And to the people who are already tired of hearing about it, I remind them how long we waited.  We deserve every single moment of this.  It’s our time.

Will the Cubs hold on to win this one?  I may or may not make it to see, but that’s unimportant tonight.  We saw what we came to see before that first pitch was ever thrown.  Welcome.  Welcome to the Golden Era of Cubs baseball.  No need to get pinched.  No need to wake up.  Yes, that is a World Series champions shirt I wore to work today.  We’re living the dream Cubs fans.  Go Cubs Go.

Finally, a World Series banner has been raised in Wrigley Field! The baseball shrine that has been and will continue to get makeovers for the better has championship banners flying. Yes, the W flags will fly almost, if not more than, 100 times this year, but now the 2016 World Series Champions banner will fly always, win or lose. Nothing will ever take that away. The only way to get close to matching it is doing it again, and this Cubs team can. The ceremony was delayed, but once it happened, it was aWesome! No tears tonight for me, just being proud to be a Cubs fan and happy that this moment finally came for so many. Yes, people will get tired of it, but who cares. They are the same people who hated for so many years and always said wait til next year. No more of that nonsense. We heard that for 108 years. Now, we can bask in this glory for as long as we’d like. Seeing that championship banner flying at Wrigley makes me want another. Seeing that championship trophy makes me want to keep it for as long as possible. Maybe another year or two? Who knows, but what I do know is that the Cubs are good and will be for years to come. What will that bring, a whole lot more W flags and maybe some more banners! For now, we bask in the glory of the 2016 Cubbies and look forward to this year’s version…GO CUBS GO!!!
