Who the heck reads books anymore? With the busy day to day stuff going on, who has the time to actually sit down and read? With people spending countless hours with email, facebook, twitter, or just browsing the internet, books are fading fast. You can even read a book on a mobile device, like a Kindle. You see book stores going out of business left and right, because it´s a dying form of media.
There are still those that like to curl up with their favorite book. Nothing beats holding that book in their hands as they turn from page to page. Maybe you have a long commute to work everyday, and choose to read vs playing some kind of game on your cell phone. Thankfully, I don´t have the long commute; one less chance for me to read. On vacation however, is a perfect time to read. It has to be the type of vacation where you are relaxing… not doing much of anything… where this reading can be achieved. Some vacations are so packed with things to do that you need a vacation from the vacation. Not this one for me… this has been total relaxation… just what the doctor ordered, and it´s been a perfect time to read a book.
I knew which book I wanted to read. I had printed out a 15% coupon from Barnes and Noble to purchase this book before leaving. When I came home from work that last day, my wife had already bought me a book; yeah, that same book I wanted.. she´s pretty good with that stuff. The book was the latest from Sam Smith: There is No Next.
Any long time Bulls fan, or even recent Bulls fan, knows who Sam Smith is. He has covered the team forever, and continues to do so. His first book, you may have heard of it, The Jordan Rules, was an awesome read. It chronicled the first Bulls championship season, and all the drama that came with it, especially when it came to Michael Jordan´s personality. Named after the defense the Pistons tried to employ against Jordan, the book was controversial at the time; it was the first inside look at MJ that was sort of negative, although it was this Jordan that helped drive the Bulls to the 6 titles. I think he wrote another book… can´t recall if I read it or not, but when I found out he was coming out with another one, and what it was going to be about, it was a MUST read for me.
I´m a little more than halfway done, and already love it. I would recommend it for any Bulls fan or Jordan fan, but also for any “fan” of the NBA and its stars today. If you want to know who the real star was, the one who made all this fame and fortune possible in the NBA today, you need to look no further than MJ. I may need another blog to fully chronicle this book, but let me just give a little taste.

The title “There is No Next” is self explanatory. Everyone always wants to name the next big thing, the next greatest ever, the next Jordan. Bottom line is, what any fan with half a brain already knows, that there is truly no next. There was only 1 Jordan… there is only one greatest player of all time… and Sam Smith expounds upon this… proving this through countless stories, and countless quotes from players, coaches, and even presidents.
It´s a good history of the Bulls too. He talks about how the franchise started off, and how it took a long time… really until MJ, for the NBA to really take off. Each chapter after that has been summarizing a year for the Bulls and MJ. From the rookie of the year, to the broken foot and eventual return for 63 pts in the Garden, to the averaging 37 points per game for an entire year, to the year where he played point guard for a stretch of 11 games and had 10 triple doubles, to the Shot, Doug Collins, then Phil Jackson, and the drama that surrounded that. It is a great stroll down memory lane.
I just got done reading the 1990-1991 chapter, one of the best seasons ever. The whole Detroit rivalry… and the completion of it with the sweep in the 1991 conference finals; that still remains one of the sweetest victories ever. Then to the Finals, where MJ missed the game winner in Game 1, brought us the Shot 2 in Game 2, hit the game tying shot to send it to OT in Game 3, to Phil asking Michael “who is open” in Game 5, the clincher. Yeah, it was Paxson, and Jordan fed him time after time, as Paxson buried jumper after jumper, and the Bulls celebrated their first ever title. Those, were, the, days. All this done by Jordan in the Finals with a toe injury that had some questioning if he`d even play; like that was ever a doubt.
OK, time to cut it for now. Get the book… now. Take the time. Read it. It´s awesome to take a look back, and amazing to remember some of the stuff he did, and is more proof for anyone who needs it, who the greatest player to ever play the game was, and who the greatest athlete of all time was. Thanks for another great one Sam… you are right on the money again.
