The Cubs put on an elaborate April Fools Joke by committing 6 errors for the first time since 2002 and losing to the Braves in Atlanta 8-0. Need I say more?
Ok, I will. Horrible, horrible game. It started with the first batter. Fly ball down the left field line in foul territory dropped by Mark Zagunis. Who? Yeah, and we thought Schwarber was a bad fielder. Very next pitch was a solo HR and we never looked back. 2 more errors that inning. Baez has been all over the place with his throws so far this year. Rizzo has saved him multiple times in the dirt. This one would be airmailed over Hendricks’ head as he covered first. Then Baez and Zagunis went for the encore, letting a pop up fall between them. 3 errors in the first inning? It reminded me of that playoff game against the Dodgers with Big Z on the mound at Wrigley. It was at this point, where I turned the TV off, because there’s just no fricking way I should be this pissed off this early in the season. I went upstairs to do some cleaning.
The start of the season has been hitting every frustration point. A starter not lasting past the third inning, the bullpen blowing games, and now making 6 errors in a game while getting shutout. Damn. This is supposed to be fun boys. Is all the talk about starting fast, laser like focus for all 162, and Maddon’s lame duck year making guys too tight?

Winning game 1 while scoring a total of 28 runs in the series should have at the very least given us a winning record. It didn’t; that’s baseball. Now starting our 2nd series, already behind a mini 8 ball, we certainly were not focused in this one. Ok, ok, we can certainly chalk this up, but we already chalked up a bad Yu and rough bullpen start. I’m starting not to like chalk. But speaking of it, they might as well make the outline for Maddon in the dugout if this keeps up.
Too early, most definitely, yet the longer this goes on, the tighter everyone will become. Again, knowing the pressure on each player to ‘save Joe’s job’ will ratchet up. Everybody squeezing that bat, feeling the need to be perfect out there. If there’s anything we know, baseball is a sport of failures. Making an out 7 of 10 times is actually very good. Losing 60 games in a year is great. Yes, these games, these things will happen; they are unavoidable. Yet, when they happen in succession to start a season we’ve been waiting almost 6 months for, it feels worse. It doesn’t help that the team who won the division last year is off to a blazing start. It doesn’t help when you have a lame duck manager and a team coming off a year of unmet expectations. It feels worse than it should right now.
I would say it’s time to relax, yet everything we’ve heard about this Cubs team is saying that’s not in the plan. It is a long season and we certainly can’t afford to dig any holes, but maybe the Cubs are just getting their share of these losses out of the way early. Yeah, that’s it. Until Wednesday…Go Cubs!!!
