OK, back to my all time defense. So far I’m running out Dick Butkus, Lawrence Taylor, and Reggie White; good start. I started picking my team with the guys that I feel are no brainers; I have another one in mind. This time, we start with the secondary.
What are we going to need back there? I like a physical secondary, especially my safeties. This is why I get pissed seeing Eddie Jackson avoid contact like he does. Yes, I remember Dave Duerson and even Gary Fencik cracking heads. There was Mark Carrier, who burst onto the scene in a big way with the Bears, coming out of USC, seemingly a school for safeties… hint hint. Then there was Mike Brown; man I loved that guy. I met Tony Parrish one night at a club; he was a good hitter for us too. I like big hitting safeties, coming up supporting the run defense and making receivers think twice before coming across the middle. When I think of the safety position, there is one name that comes to mind.
Ronnie Lott is the next addition to my all-NFL defensive team. Yeah, like I said, another no brainer. If there was a football dictionary, under the safety position would be a picture of Ronnie Lott. He actually started his career as a CB believe it or not; I like that versatility. Guy that can cover, pick off a pass, and ring your bell… I wish the Bears could find one of these guys in the draft. We’ve already talked about Montana and Rice on the other side of the ball, but that Niners dynasty wasn’t all about the offense. Ronnie was a big part of that Niners defense.

He also has 10 Pro Bowl appearances. His 63 picks are good for 6th all time. Of course being part of 4 Super Bowl championship teams doesn’t hurt either. If somehow my front 7 doesn’t get to the ball carrier, Lott will clean it up. Anytime you need a big tackle, you can count on Lott.
This concludes the no brainer portion of my all time NFL defense. It’s not that I’m going to go off the beaten path the rest of the way, it’s just that there are multiple ways I can go. From this point on, there is some serious competition. Who will I pick from the 85 Bears? What about that Steel Curtain defense? I thought I was pretty zoned in on my remaining secondary positions, but then some other guys come to mind. More so than the offense, I feel like I need to select a 2nd team on the defensive side of things; let’s not get crazy… let’s just finish up the starters and go from there. Let’s stay in the defensive backfield and work our way up to the line of scrimmage. Although there are many really good options, it’ll be hard to argue my remaining 3 choices.
