February 5, 2022: Preparing for the Long Term

posted in: Bulls | 0

After that dunk last night, I just wanted to write about Ayo. I cannot overstate how much I love this kid; we will talk about him, but… on this night after a tough back to back for the Bulls on the road, I’m thinking big picture. I’m thinking of how all these injuries are preparing the Bulls for the long term; how all these games missed are helping prepare the Bulls for the bigger moments that we are now expecting to come in the second season. Still some games to go, and that whole 6-8 week period where we may have our full team back, but, until then, the type of game experience that the Bulls got in the past 2 games, I think, has been invaluable.

They didn’t win the first of these back to backs in Toronto; what a game it was though. It was the Bulls down in this one, making that comeback to get this game to OT. While you could tell Zach wasn’t 100%, DD sure was. He was described as an elite scorer in one of these past two games; that couldn’t be more true. The dude can fill it up. I love the fact how he is so steady come crunch time; no panic. I would love for this one quality from DD to be contagious. I know we can count on him when it matters most; what a signing that has been… he is certainly climbing the list of best free agent pickups here in Chicago, just like everybody said he would be… haha.

Another guy that has been playing really great, is Vooch. I like Vooch, but I have been critical of him. I don’t like him shooting too many treys, which is why I feel this recent success from behind the line is both a gift and a curse. Don’t get me wrong… I love when he makes them, but… his success, and the team’s success, involves him being down low doing his thing; he did his thing in the past two. Sure, the Pacers were shorthanded in the frontcourt, but I’m not so sure Vooch can’t be a force like that in the paint in most games. He just has to play strong, tough down there. Another complaint of mine over the weeks, is how sometimes he appears soft down there; he definitely has his moments though. I want these moments of going up strong and slamming the ball, and of being big on defense, to multiply. If Vooch can play like THAT on a consistent basis… if he can play like THAT in the playoffs… man, that makes our chances a lot better. Bravo Vooch; keep it up!

Finally back to that kid Ayo. What can’t this kid do? He started the season as a spark off the bench; what a spark he was… he still is. Bringing that defensive intensity, that oh yeah, has elevated him to match up against the best players on the opposition, is ONE of his calling cards. Coming off the bench throughout the year, you need to produce in those precious minutes; he has… he has gotten more because of that. He can score… whether it’s a spot up trey, a nice little short jumper after driving in from the 3 point line, or a quick take to the hole; this has been a very nice surprise. Most importantly, he helps this team go. Who would have thunk that? I knew we were very fortunate that he fell to us in the draft; I was very excited for that, but THIS good… as a rookie??? He helps the offense go with his ball movement, and now double digit assists; he helps the defense go with his impressive defense against those go to guys on the other team, and quick rotations. He’s made big shots in the clutch, and now he drives to the hole and finishes like THAT to seal the W on Friday night? I could go on, but his development this year, the experience he’s getting… this could be THE key to a deep run in a few months. Rookie of the year anyone?

I look forward to the day when the Bulls are 100%, but cannot overlook how these injuries have helped give this team’s already really good depth, some HUGE experience. First team, second team… the Bulls should be able to run a combination of both whenever, wherever, and be good. Will it be good enough? The fact that I’m asking this question this year is exciting as hell. More wins this year than all of last year already? We are witnessing the jump; can’t wait to see where we end up landing. Go Bulls!!!
