January 27, 2022: EE-BER-FLOOS

So, the Bears hired a guy whose name we can’t pronounce… great. EE-BER-FLOOS; got it? OK good. I don’t know about you, but when I say that name I think of the yodeler game from Price is Right; hoping this guy doesn’t fall off the cliff… at least not too soon. Who the heck is this guy?

Well, first off, let’s be real. How many of us really knew a lot about him before we heard the news on Thursday morning? If you did, kudos to you. I didn’t. I’ve read up about him a little bit since the news broke that he had been announced the new Bears head coach. How much can you really learn about a guy from reading a couple articles, from seeing some blurbs on Twitter? Not much. I love how people are rushing to judgment; I love how people are being so negative.

Who did you want? Did you want another offensive genius like Matt Nagy? Yeah, how’d that work out? So what if Matt Eberflus is a defensive coach; it doesn’t matter! The head coach shouldn’t be calling plays anyways; didn’t we learn that lesson already? I will agree that maybe the most important hire he makes from this point on is the offensive coordinator. We do need a dynamic offensive coaching staff, that should own the offense from A to Z. Let the head coach do what he does; hire people on the offensive side of the ball to do what they do.

Maybe you wanted one of the other finalists: Jim Caldwell or Dan Quinn? These guys we knew a little something about because they’ve been head coaches before. So you wanted to bring in Caldwell, a Detroit Lions retread? Or maybe Dan Quinn, the famous 27-3 Super Bowl coach? Or maybe you wanted the OC from KC, Bieniemy? Another KC assistant coach, really? In fact, the fact that Ryan Poles came from KC and HE didn’t hire him, should tell us all you need to know there. I would have been OK with Flores, Harbaugh, and most recently available Sean Payton. I guess those would have been the big name guys. Maybe that’s what you wanted.

Whoever you wanted, and for whatever reasons you wanted that guy, fine; can’t argue with you. But whoever the Bears decided to bring in, we need to give them a chance, even some guy whose name we can’t pronounce. One thing I think we can all agree on is that change was needed; this is change! Yes, even though it’s Ryan and Matt again, doesn’t mean the results will be the same. Fact is, we don’t know what the results will be, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to start off thinking the worst already. Let’s give it a chance; you know we’ll all be turning against them after a few losses anyways…

Until then, let’s take advantage of this change, and embrace some renewed hope. What moves will be next; will they be the right ones? How quick will we get better; will we get better? Will Justin Fields be that guy; if not, then what? We’ve got some answers this week with Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus, but there are still way more questions than answers. Got to start somewhere though. Good luck guys; you have the benefit of the doubt… for now. Bear Down!!!
