February 5, 2015: The Bull Goes On

posted in: Bears, Blackhawks, Bulls | 4

Another loss for the Chicago Bulls last night in Houston.  Entering the 4th quarter down 5 points, the wheels fell off.  Houston went on a 13-0 run; game, set, match.  The Bulls now sit at 30-20; you worried yet?

Call me a homer… call me unrealistic… call me stupid… I’m not.  I may be all of the above, but one thing I’m NOT, is worried.  Maybe I need to be.  Maybe we all need to worry.  I’ll tell you what, I’m going to continue to NOT worry.  You know who needs to worry… the Bulls.

They need to worry about getting their stuff together.  It starts now.  With 9 of the next 12 games coming back in the UC, it’s time to start taking care of business.  It all starts with defending your home court; they’ll have a good chance to do that in the upcoming weeks.

That’s the biggest thing that bothers me right now; their home record.  Every team goes through struggles… every team loses to bum teams once in a while… every team loses on the road against good teams…. every team has its ups and downs in an 82 game season.  Let me rephrase all of the above:  every GOOD team.  Something that GOOD teams do NOT do, is struggle at home.  This has been the thing that sticks out the most to me about this Bulls team.

13-11!  That’s almost a .500 home record; no fricking way.  I’ll tel you what, it’s not because the Bulls don’t have a good home court advantage.  They are near the top of the NBA in attendance every year.  We flock to the games on weeknights.  We make it to the games in bad weather.  We cheer on the Bulls through good and bad.  The fans are definitely NOT the problem.  So what is it?

Is it because the Bulls just think they’ll record a W by stepping on the floor when they’re at home?  I hope not.  This reminds me of another Chicago team… that plays football… that thought just because we practiced well… just because on paper we were good… just because the preseason predictions had us as a darkhorse Super Bowl contender… we thought we could step on the field with all of our talent and run over other NFL teams.  Please tell me that’s not what it is.

I want to end the possible comparisions with the Bears right there.  This Bulls team is still 10 games over .500.  They’re still firmly in the playoffs (thanks Eastern Conference).  However, they are now sitting tied with Cleveland at the #4 seed.  Is there are a risk the Bulls miss the playoffs?  If you answered yes, let me be the first to slap you.  That’s like saying the Blackhawks will miss the playoffs, although based on the strength of each of their conferences, I’d argue that’s a greater possibility.  I think there will be none of that…

The Bulls WILL be in the playoffs, and based on their home court performance, would it be better to take the road ON the road through the playoffs?  I’m not signing up for that, although… their road record is the 6th best in the NBA.  That is a good sign… their record would have been even better had it not been for this latest 3 game losing streak.  Losing on the road in the NBA happens.  It’s a confidence booster to see how well the Bulls play on the road overall; let’s keep THAT in our back pockets.

So you want me to worry?  You think I should worry?  I’ll get back to you after this latest string of home games.  If we don’t improve upon that home record, I WILL begin to worry.  Until then, I’m staying focused on the positives here, like their road record.  I’m going to believe that the Bulls will get their stuff together, regardless of the current slump; nobody is going to tell me anything different.   Yeah, another thing you can call me is stubborn.  Go Bulls!

More worried about this Bulls team than the Hawks. The Hawks have proven they have what it takes to reach the pinnacle…been there, done that. This Bulls team has not. For both teams, it is better to struggle now than entering the playoffs. Lets get the losing and struggling out of the way so both teams are ready when, not if, the playoffs roll around!
    GO BULLS!!!

The only reason I worry more about the Hawks is the strength of teams in that conference. They continue to slide, and they could be in jeopardy. I don’t think that will happen. As far as the Bulls, even if they continued to slide, there’s no way they slide below the 8th seed. Even if they went 11-21 and finished at .500, they’d still probably make the playoffs. Now if the Bulls were in the Western Conference, it would be a much different story..

I think some of the Bulls ‘issue’ is on Thibs. If you watch, and I’m sure you have been, there’s been too much laziness in the 4th qtr. I think he needs to give the starters more rest so they are still both sides of the floor functional. I see a lot of 4th qtr shots banging short iron or just plain short…….tired. A lot of defensive lapses in the 4th qtr…..tired. As long as the games are close or in the lead, more rest is allowable and needed. Why do we have those guys sitting on the bench, if he doesn’t think they can fill-in when necessary. Spread the time out a little more and possibly get more late-game readiness from the starters.

You are not alone in that opinion. That had been the knock on Thibs, but this year, he seems to be using the bench more and more. Maybe still not enough?
