February 4, 2015: Bad Hawks

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

Being shutout in back to back games for the first time since 2006.  Giving up a season high 24 shots in the 2nd period.  Falling farther and farther behind the leaders in the Western Conference.  The Hawks are in trouble… or are they?

I’m going to choose to focus another story about the “bad” Hawks, and that’s their Vegas trip.  And in this definition of bad, it’s the one where bad means good.  Who really cares that they lost a game to the Minnesota Wild?  They’re a team we’ve knocked out of the playoffs repeatedly; a team that is not on the same level as the Hawks.  A team they should beat… of course.  Could the Hawks have beaten anybody after 2 days in Vegas??? Probably not.

Ah, Vegas.  Sin City as some call it.  I would have to start another feature on this website to detail every trip I’ve ever made to Vegas, but then that wouldn’t be smart.  That wouldn’t be following the mantra what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  There would be many stories I could not share in detail at this point.  Vegas is fun… bottom line.  A lot of fun… can you just imagine partying/gambling with the Blackhawks in Vegas?

I’ve rolled to Vegas with what I think is a big bankroll… a few grand.  Imagine rolling in Las Vegas with 10 grand… 20 grand… hell, even 50 grand.  Whole different ball game boys.  Who is the craziest Blackhawk?  Patrick Kane maybe?  Maybe new daddy Carcillo at one point or another.  I would have loved to been on that trip with the boys… after all, how many more Vegas guy trips do I have left?

That would be the thing… it’s a built in excuse; it’s a TEAM activity.  It’s JOB related.  How can you NOT go?  Yeah, honey, I really don’t want to go, but Coach Q is requiring us to.  Haha… My wife knows me too well for that.  I think I’m going to write up a letter to my management about sending me to some conference in Vegas…  anybody want to cosign on that?

The whole team looked like they were hungover, except… wait for it…. Corey Crawford.  You think he’s learned his lesson?  Getting hammered at a concert, falling down, injuring himself, and pissing away a few weeks of the season.  He’s already had his mulligan; no need to push it.  I could just see it now…. Kaner:  Come on Corey… it’s only 2am… more jager bombs… we’re about to head to Sapphire’s.  Corey:  I don’t feel too well.  I’m heading back to the room.  Haha..

Bottom line I think it’s great that the Hawks do this kind of stuff.  It’s team building for sure.  Did that affect their performance in this one?  Sure, but so what?  Shall we plan Vegas trips on every road trip?  Probably not.  Is anybody really worried about the Hawks?  Probably not.

Let the boys be boys once in a while.  It’s a long season, especially when you’re playing deep into the playoffs 3 out of 5 years, and throw in the Olympics…  They need to blow off some steam… relax… get your mind of hockey… get hammered… hit a strip club… throw 5 grand down at the Roulette wheel… whatever.  Something tells me we’re going to see a different Hawks team in Winnipeg on Friday night.  We’re going to see an inspired bounce back effort that this team has been known for.  We’re going to see the Hawks get a little payback on the Jets for the earlier losses.  We’re going to see the Good Hawks….

Let’s give the Hawks a mulligan on this one, and relax.  The Bad Hawks had their weekend in Vegas; now it’s time to baton down the hatches.  It’s time to get ready for the homestretch.  It’s time to get ready for that playoff run.  It’s time to first, make the playoffs.  I’m ready for this regular season stuff to be over with; it’s time for the second season to begin.  Only 31 more games to go…
