With the NFL season complete (it has been for the Bears for about 2 months), the focus turns to our current sports & teams. I love watching the Bulls and the Blackhawks, but I’m ready for the next sport. I love basketball, and I love hockey, but I’m already waiting for the baseball season to begin.
No offense to the two sports going on, but baseball is my first love. It’s hard not to go crazy during football season; the NFL has engulfed us. Yet, the beginning of baseball season is always the best. Maybe it coincides with the weather change in Chicago (most years) and the beginning of Spring. Maybe it’s because hope springs eternal on Opening Day. Maybe, especially for us Cubs fans, it’s the day when everybody is in first place, including US! It’s the fulfillment of the phrase “wait til next year”. It’s the time when next year is actually here.
This time next year is actually a possibility… for both teams. That’s the best part about it. Both teams have a legitimate shot at doing something this year. It should be 10x better than last year, when both teams combined for almost 200 losses. Regardless of which team you’re rooting for, it’s true that both teams have improved, whether it be through FA signings, trades, or the arrival of young talent. Who had the better offseason?
This is a no-win argument of course. We love our baseball teams so much that we will argue to the death about Cubs Sox stuff, and believe me, I’m always up for a good Cubs Sox argument. I’m sure there will be many here in the upcoming season. For now, I’m going to table that, and applaud both teams’ offseason efforts. I actually think that both teams have a chance to make the postseason.

So I’ll play “Chicago” fan for a day. Of course, that’s what I am, but when it comes to baseball, there is a clear-cut decision. It’s either Cubs or Sox. Yes, there are some who root for both, and only choose one or the other when they play each other, but I’m betting those are in the minority. Most Sox fans I know hate the Cubs, and most Cubs fans I know, don’t give a crap about the Sox. Like I said, I’m not going to get into this right now…
You know, the Sox fans have the ultimate comeback… we got one, you don’t. At the end of the day, Sox fans will live and die with that. What will ever happen if the Cubs win one? What will the Sox fans say then? Well, until then, it is what it is. The Cubs haven’t won in 107 years, and only have 2 very old World Series championships to their name. The Sox only have 3 titles, yet, they have the one that everyone remembers. It still doesn’t matter… there’s only one baseball team in Chicago.
Wait, I’m not going to get into this now, but it’s so much fun. This is part of the baseball ritual in Chicago. Sox fans saying the Cubs suck, and Cubs fans telling the Sox fans that their team doesn’t matter. It’s even going to be better this year, now that both teams have a decent squad. You really didn’t feel the rivalry last year, or the last couple for that matter. It’s baaaaaack.
I will thoroughly enjoy the basketball and hockey seasons, and root until the very end for our Bulls and Hawks. But, there will be something in the back of my mind… something I’m waiting for… it’s the start of the 2015 baseball season that’s on deck, and I can’t wait.
