January 3, 2022: Capping Off Year One

posted in: Bears | 2

I’ve been playing Fantasy Football for a while now… almost 30 years? Yeah, I was playing when we would check the Sun Times on Monday morning to finalize the matchups, keeping track of everything with pen and paper. It’s a bit different nowadays, but it’s still every bit as fun. This was especially true this year.

Yeah, I flamed out last week in my auction and keeper leagues; of course I would have won the finals in each if I had made it, but anyways… I did make it to the finals in one of my leagues. It was our family league, the first year of many to come for this one. No money involved, just lots of back and forth between the family… playing for that pride; maybe we’ll get creative with some prizes at some point. But I was just so happy we did it. It featured a league with some “experts” like me, my brother, and my brother in law, and a wide age range of “newbies” from my son and his cousins to my dad, playing in their rookie seasons. The boys have really taken to it; I’ve created a monster with mine… haha.

With my birthday and my brother in law’s just a week apart at the end of August, it presents the perfect opportunity for a live draft; this day is half the fun of the entire season. My brother in law got the draft kit, featuring a big board with all the names; my nieces helped stick all the names up there after all the selections, before all the kids headed to the pool. It was a really nice time; it’s always fun to get together with the family, but to pair it with fantasy football… awesome. I look forward to many of these in the years to come… but back to this year.

Yeah, it was me, Savage Beasts, against my brother in law and godson, who co-owned their team, Fluffinators; the inaugural championship matchup did not disappoint. It started with Ja’Marr Chase single handedly carrying me to a big lead after outscoring their first round pick and QB Mahomes; 55.6 points?!?! Little did I know, I would need every single one of those; I guess I should have known better. One guy that made me mad from their team was Devin Singletary, which was a nice mid-week pickup for them. It made me mad because I have him in my keeper league and he hasn’t done a damn thing all year, but THIS week he decides to have his best week of the season?!?! Anyways, I’m still good… right? Well, my other WRs didn’t exactly go nuts, and of course, I made a last minute switch that cost me about 35 points… yep. I had Penny and Mitchell in my lineup for the afternoon, and swapped them out for Edmonds and Williams from Denver; unreal… And with St. Brown from the Lions (who my son told them they should have started the previous week) going nuts, this matchup all of a sudden got really close. Of course, it would come down to Monday Night football. I needed Diontae Johnson to score less than 18.4 points…

But before that… there was one move that I made that DID pay off; I picked up the Bears defense. Go figure! 21 points later, they turned in their best fantasy week of the year. And one more thing that I didn’t realize until after the early games yesterday… Antonio Brown walked off the field in the middle of the game! And yes, he was playing on my opponent’s team… haha. When I talked to my godson before the MNF kickoff, he mentioned Chase of course, and then Antonio Brown. Hilarious… it’s funny when you look at all the little things that went one way or another and how they all add up. It’s also funny how many weekly matchups come down to Monday Night. This time, it would be for all the marbles.

With an early TD in the bank, things were looking bleak heading into the 2nd half. Leading by only 1.3 points in the 4th quarter, all they needed was one more 4 yard completion to win the title. After time expired, he still needed that one more completion. Crazy!!! This was capping off year one in epic fashion. I had been texting back and forth with my brother in law during the entire 4th quarter; he couldn’t believe it… neither could I. I pulled it off by the skin of my teeth. I can’t wait to tell my son in the morning; I know he’ll be happy to know he won his 7th place matchup as well… haha.

It was a nice ending to a fun season. Yes, winning certainly makes it more fun, but in this league, that’s definitely not the most important thing. All of us doing something together for 17 weeks is it; the draft day/birthday event is it too. I already can’t wait for next season. I joked that my son is already doing his mock draft… haha. This one was special. Until next year… oh wait, we’re doing fantasy baseball too?!?! Yes!!!
