As it got late in the day on Sunday, I looked up at the clock, and it showed 10 to 5. I asked my wife to check what time the Super Bowl started. You see, I really cared about what happened in this game.
You get sick of watching other teams play in the Super Bowl, especially the same teams. The Patriots back again vs the Seahawks looking to repeat. Who really cares? Well, as the game started, I had decided I was cheering for New England, and as they scored the game’s first TD, I was celebrating. Then my wife asked me why I was celebrating… it’s not like it’s the Bears. She was right, yet I still continued to cheer for the Patriots. I mean, it IS the biggest game in the world, and you have to pick a side right? Well, as the game made it to halftime, the score was tied at 14. OK, well at least it’s going to be a good game. Then came the part I was kind of looking forward to: the Katy Perry halftime show.
Well, that was a bust. There was some cool special effects and the way they changed from one setting to another was nice, but Katy was the main attraction here. I was very disappointed in the choice of wardrobe… Then, as they showed her face, you could clearly she wasn’t actually singing those words… I guess everybody does it. So with the halftime show a bust, I decided that I really did NOT care about the rest of the game, and headed out to the feet of snow that awaited me outside.
My dog loves the snow. She prances around like a reindeer, although even for her, this was a LOT of snow. As I let her off leash to run around like a nut, she bolted down the sidewalk. She got to a certain point, then I called her back. As she began to run back to me… and by run I mean like 30 mph… I started to worry. There was only a little rut in the snow made by the trail of people’s footsteps, and I was standing dead center… she charged down that same rut. As she crashed into me, I went straight down into the snow. It was a classic collision that I wish somebody would have recorded… There have been plenty of moments that I think would have won on that America’s Funniest Home Video show, and this was definitely one.

The first one, there were already 3 guys there to help, so I moved on. Others were located down the side street, NOT the direction I was going. Then there was the one stuck right at the end of my alley; a single woman needed some assistance. So I told her I’d be right back, then I dropped the battering ram back at home. As I made it back, 2 other guys showed up. We shoveled the alley, pushed her car, and we finally made it to that 6th house from the corner about 30 minutes later. Then, I decided to start preparing for our departure from home, whenever that will be. Cleaning off both cars, trying to shovel a little path out, breathing heavily… man, I’m out of shape. Unless we don’t plan on leaving for a week, it’s going to be tough sledding down that alley.
By the time I made it back inside, the game was almost over. As my wife took all my wet clothes, I finally plopped back down on the couch. There was under 2 minutes left and Seattle had the ball down 4. Well, here is the great ending that I asked for. What a phenomenal catch! It reminded me of the Antonio Freeman catch against the Vikings in that Monday night game. It was another huge catch against the Patriots in the Super Bowl. It nearly sealed the deal. After letting the clock wind down, and running Lynch close to the goal line, it appeared Seattle would pull this out. Then the horrible play call happened, and the ball was intercepted… game. over.
As the last pick happened, I cheered. Hey, I thought I didn’t care about this game. Why am I rooting for the Patrtiots? It’s not like they’re my team; it’s not like I root for them ever. It’s because it’s the Super Bowl. It’s because I’m a sports fanatic. It’s because you have to root for SOMEBODY if you spend the time to watch a game.
Hopefully, I won’t have to worry about this one day. Hopefully, the Bears will make it back soon… then I’ll really care about the winner on this Sunday. Until then, back out to the snow; somebody’s got to get to work today. Good riddance 2014-2015 NFL season; let’s do this again next year.

The reason you–and seemingly most of the rest of the civilized world–rooted for the Patriots is that deep down inside you know that Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are a bunch of real scumbags. This was perfectly exemplified in the aftermath of two plays after the interception when the Scumbags, er–Seahawks, decided to start a fight after they lost the game. Belichick might be intense, but Pete Carroll is scum.
