December 21, 2021: Go Eagles

Go Eagles? WTF. Has someone hacked into my account? Why on earth would I say Go Eagles unless they were playing the Packers? Well, everyone better get used to it. Yes, it is true: I am now an Eagles fan. Of course I’m talking about the name of my son’s school’s team. He played in his first basketball game this past Saturday; his team won 30-9!

I’m excited as hell for him. I never had any sports teams in grammar school. Thankfully, I had the park and the Boys Club to keep me busy in that area, but school? Not until high school did I have an opportunity to play sports with the school I attended. So yeah, pretty happy that he has that chance; pretty happy that he’s starting in the 4th grade. It’s great that he has most of the boys in his class on the team, which means by the time 7th-8th grade roll around, they could be pretty dangerous. For now, just wetting his feet, working on his game, and of course, having fun, is the most important thing.

There are 18 kids on the JV team; 18! The JV team is made up of 4th through 6th graders. So… I’m guessing my son isn’t going to get a whole lot of playing time, although he did get in the game on Saturday. There were “only” 12 kids at this first game of the season, and with the game going as it did, the coach did a really nice job getting all the kids; I snapped that picture of my son at the scorer’s table checking in for the first time. I could tell he was nervous, not because he was shy or anything; he wasn’t. He got up a few shots, including a couple free throws after getting fouled, but… no points yet. He snagged a rebound or two, and almost had a steal in his limited time. The best part for me was that the coach let him bring the ball up a few times. He knows how to dribble really good; I told him this is a great skill to have. While he remains one of the shortest kids in his class, and thus the team, his dribbling skills will be nice to have once he does sprout; it would be nice to have a few more inches now, but… it’s all good.

Yeah, my wife and I were sitting in the stands, as were the rest of the parents, cheering them on. I was yelling at him after missing his first free throw: “bend your knees!!!” My wife was surprisingly quiet; there were other moms much more vocal than her; that’ll change… haha. I think we were both treading lightly with this being our first game as one of the player’s parents.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love watching my Chicago teams play, obviously. But watching my son play? It doesn’t get better than that. There won’t be another game until after Christmas break, so we’ll have to be patient. Looking forward to the next game, and the years ahead, watching my son do his thing. Go boy go!!!
