November 20, 2021: Denver Death Trap

posted in: Bulls | 0

I knew we didn’t do great in Denver historically. What I didn’t know, is that playing in Mile High has been a death trap for the Bulls in recent history. One win since MJ was playing here; really? Yeah, our last win in Denver was 2005-2006; the last win before that… 1997-1998… the year of the Last Dance. I know we only get one chance per year to earn a victory out there, but… that’s just wild.

Before we get into what happened on Friday night in Denver, I wanted to glance back at that last win in Denver. We won 110-107. The leading scorers were Ben Gordon for us, and Carmelo Anthony for the Nuggets. The top rebounder for the Bulls: Tyson Chandler. Remember him and Curry? The modern day Twin Towers didn’t necessarily work out. And then there was Captain Kirk with the most assists for us. This group made up the first good team since MJ left, making the playoffs the previous year, this year, and the next. They won 1 playoff series vs the Heat in 2007, and that was it, until D Rose was drafted. Since we’re getting a quick history lesson here, what about that 1997-1998 win in Denver? It was a blowout… 118-90. MJ with 30, Rodman 20 boards, and Kukoc 10 dimes. Ah, the good old days, although watching the Bulls nowadays, is pretty fun as well.

It was a great game. Sure, Denver was without their top 3 players, and yes, the Bulls were without Vooch, but the Nuggets played tough, defending their home court, which by the end of the game, sounded like it was infiltrated with Bulls fans; represent baby! The quarter that really took this game to the next level was the 3rd. The Bulls took it from a one point lead to a ten point lead. The way they did it was impressive as hell. There were 6 dunks by the Bulls, including one from Derrick Jones Jr that had me yelling. Outside of the dunks, it was 4 buckets and 2 free throws from DD and 2 three pointers and 3 free throws from Zach (outside of his 1 dunk). The only other scoring was 2 free throws by Caruso (man can he play some D though huh?) and the quarter ending trey by Ayo (he’s not giving up those minutes to Coby easily is he?) Our dynamic duo was leading us again. They would not let us lose; we were NOT coming back home without a W in Denver which would mean a winning West Coast road trip.

Like I said though, the Nuggets wouldn’t die… so we needed more from our 1-2 punch, and boy did they deliver. The last 5 minutes of Bulls scoring went like this: Zach trey, Zach deuce, Zach deuce, Zach trey, Zach deuce … that’s right, 12 straight for Zach before DD ended the Nuggets’ evening with 8 straight free throws; isn’t it great seeing our guys make free throws? 24 for 24 in this one!!! Just something else I love about this team. They got that W, and come back home with a better winning percentage than they left with. Any doubters out there still?

How good can they be? Only time will tell, but I’ll tell you this. After 7 years of a Hoiberg and Boylen lead squad which produced 1 winning season, 1 playoff appearance, and many, many tough to watch regular season losses, it feels like we’re finally back. Yes, last year in Donovan’s first year as head coach, it was still tough to watch at times, but this year thus far is making those days feel long gone. I think it’s safe to say we’re good again, and fun as hell to watch. Next up: Round 2 vs the Knicks at the UC on Sunday. Welcome home boys!
