November 2, 2021: Five Years Later

Five years later… man, how time flies. It was just five years ago that the Cubs won the World Series. Saw plenty of cool stuff out there that reminded me of that day, including Jorge Soler winning the MVP for the Braves as they beat the Astros. Good for him, and good for the Braves. If I had to pick one team out of the playoff participants to win, it would have been them. And as far as Jorge… very happy for him. I do remember he played well when it mattered most. I believe it was 2015 when he had hits in like 8 consecutive playoff games… something like that. Anyways, should we have kept him? Ha… Could ask that question about a lot of ex-Cubs that are scattered throughout the league at this point. Hey, I’ll always root for them, especially those guys that were on that 2016 team, and no, I’m not going to sit here and be pissed about the fact that all these guys aren’t still with the Cubs… well, OK, maybe some of them, but… Congrats to the Braves.

The Astros were a really good team; I know most people didn’t like them because of the whole cheating thing… like nobody else was doing it, but whatever, I get it. I kind of wanted Dusty to get one finally. I liked him as the Cubs manager back in the day until I didn’t, which was about Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS. Yeah, we blamed everybody we could that day, and Dusty was no different. Was it his fault our prized pitchers got hurt? Was it Thibs fault for Derrick Rose being on the court in a blowout? Was it any coach/manager’s fault when a player got hurt? Again, we look to blame, and they certainly aren’t absolved from it. Personally, I blame him for the way he handled Game 6, or the lack of handling, as things began to fall apart. Certainly felt like he could have done more to try to stop the bleeding, or prevent that ball from rolling down the hill, but… hindsight you know…

Hindsight also tells me that 5 years ago was one of the best moments, if not THE best moment in my die hard Chicago sports fan’s life. In one way, it feels like just yesterday; in another way, it feels like decades ago. I can still remember my emotions around that time, and how much of a crazy roller coaster ride it was, with Game 7 being the culmination of it all. Yet, I look at today’s Cubs roster, and only Willson and Kyle remain… and oh yeah, JHey. Life moves pretty fast around here. I’m not going to bitch about the current state of the Cubs and how we got here… not today. With the offseason officially beginning today, I’ll have plenty of time for that. No, instead, I want to embrace my Uncle Rico mode, and get in that time machine, and remember for a second what that night felt like when KB threw that ball to Rizzo, and it was officially real… or surreal maybe…

Yeah buddy… what a time to be alive. Until the next time… until the next time…
