From one extreme to the other, this is where we currently sit with the UC brethren. There was hope for the Hawks coming into this year (still is btw), but that has been rewarded with a winless opening 5 games of the season. The Blackhawks are never winning again!!!
I tried to throw out the strength of schedule thus far, after the first loss at home on Tuesday night; I got nothing this time around. The Canucks? Really? Yeah, really. Another game, another L, which lead to more boos from the Madhouse crowd. Sunday night will be the next opportunity for the Hawks to record their first W; if we can’t beat the Wings at home…
I actually got to watch a good portion of the game on Thursday night. It was a little tough, with what I had hoped was the last game of the NLCS on, and a football game with fantasy implications going at the same time. Commercials were for flipping. It was good to see the Kane DeBrincat combo light the lamp; it was bad that this was the only goal of the night. With 9 goals in 5 games, I don’t think you need to have an NHL PHD to figure out what the problem is. Now solving this problem… ain’t so easy.

I’m not ready yet, but with every loss, comes mounting pressure… both on Colliton as a coach, and for the players on the ice; this isn’t a good place to be. How will Jeremy face the heat? Lineup changes are surely one thing he can try. Making somebody who has been underperforming thus far a healthy scratch may work too, although at this point, probably too many to choose from. Scrapping your whole offensive and defensive strategy and changing gears 5 games into the season? Probably not going to happen; probably not that smart either. The pressure weighs on the guys too, and skating around squeezing those sticks a little tighter doesn’t usually bode well. Hockey, out of any sport, is a game of inches; I guess you could apply that statement to each sport, but… we’ve seen times when even the greatest of Blackhawk teams have went through slumps. We’ve seen many posts hit; many near misses in the opponent’s net. Was hoping the goal last night would open the flood gates, but nah… they’re still jammed up. Maybe it’s going to take Toews to score to get this party started… shit, even an assist from him; Toews has zero points through the first 5 games too. Kind of unfair to single him out… he is just coming back from being out a year… plus there are only 6 guys total that have scored a goal thus far this year… but, he is the captain, and he will need to return to himself to help this team breakthrough and start playing better, yes?
I don’t know; I don’t have the answer… I wish I did. It’s just hard to believe that this team is not going to start playing better very soon. The Hawks are not THIS bad, but… your record is your record. Have to own it and do something to change it (hey, haven’t I heard this recently??). Hoping Sunday is that day. Go Hawks!!!
