October 19, 2021: Panic Time

The Hawks made it back to a packed UC on Tuesday night to play the Islanders on ESPN BTW. Surely back in front of the faithful, the Hawks would up their game and get their first W of the season. Well, quite the contrary. The Hawks got stomped, bringing their record to 0-3-1 after 4 games. Is it panic time yet?

Sure, the Islanders are among the favorites this year, but this was their first win of the season. Sure, the Avalanche are Stanley Cup candidates, but their only win of the season thus far was against us. And yes, the Penguins and Devils are both undefeated, including wins over us. Am I blaming the strength of schedule thus far? Maybe; you buying it?

The guy who is getting the most blame these days is head coach Jeremy Colliton, who heard the boo birds on Tuesday night from the faithful. I’ve seen plenty of people calling for his head already. I guess it’s “already” for this season, but have we seen enough to make this decision? Taking a quick peek, I can’t believe that he’s been here this long already. He took over during the 2018-2019 season. With this shitty start, his record sits at 86-86-25. Is 500 that bad? Well, it’s bad when you replaced a legend.

Yeah, when the Hawks made the move to kick Q to the curb, not sure of many who were happy; I certainly was not. My whole thing with these type of moves by our teams is always “did we get better?” Who are we replacing these guys with? I know it’s not always that simple, but maybe it should be. Was bringing in Colliton going to put us in a better position to win hockey games than keeping Coach Q? I think that’s an easy answer, at least for the short term. We knew he wouldn’t be better, and by missing the playoffs that year, it was proven. The next year we DID make the playoffs, with the COVID extended playoff bracket, and actually WON that series against the Oilers, before being steamrolled by Vegas. Last year was not great, but can you really put that on Jeremy? I don’t know… Taking everything into account, I’m not sure I have reached the fire Colliton verdict quite yet… but it usually takes me a while to reach that state…

I gave Boylen the benefit of the doubt for a while with the Bulls; see how that turned out. I’m still holding out hope for Nagy, while everybody wants him canned. I’m like whatever with Ross; sounds like he’s going to get extended. But Colliton… again, my question would be: If not him, then who? And does the answer to this question give us a better chance to win? I know when I finally got there with Boylen, I thought an empty chair would give us a better chance to win games… don’t want to put Jeremy on that level… yet.

Personally, I think we need to give this a little time. The last 2 years have been tough to judge, based on everything going on. I do think this year should be the year where Colliton is under the microscope; I certainly believe his seat should be hot. But, we’re 4 games in… I think it would be too soon. I think we need to see a little more from this team. Would changing the coach bring a spark to this team? Sure, it always does, right? Would that spark be sustained, or literally just be a spark? What will turn this ship around? Back to work on Thursday at home vs Vancouver. Something has certainly got to give. I had real hope about this season for the Hawks; I’m holding onto that hope… for now… just like I think the Hawks should do with Colliton. Let’s talk in a couple weeks. Go Hawks!!!
