The 6 game winning streak was nice, but it was against bum teams. Surely the Cubs would return back to a comfortable level of suckage with the Reds coming into town, vying for a Wild Card spot…. that’s why they play the games. The Cubs ended up taking the series from the Reds, and now have won 8 of 9 games.
Wednesday night had a nice ending, with J-Hey hitting a 3 run walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. It wasn’t his first. I remember one specifically back in the day when he hit a walk off grand slam against the Phillies in Wrigley. This one, like that one, was a no doubter. This one, unlike that one, doesn’t really mean much for us in the standings. Yes, we know, we know… the Cubs season is over; it’s still nice to see the guys playing hard out there. That should stand for something, no?
Well, looking ahead, constructing the 2022 roster and beyond, you’ll want guys like THIS… that give their best effort at all times. We’ve seen a lot of that. And yes, while effort is nice, and really should be a pre-requisite, the talent needs to accompany that effort most of the time to be successful. This Cubs roster regardless of their current hot streak does NOT have enough talent. In fact, I think there should be MORE subtraction before addition.

J-Hey, love him for the rain delay speech, but if he could be moved… who am I kidding? Who is going to take him and his entire salary? Nobody. Ian Happ. How hot has he been? This dude is scorching right now, which is what the Cubs should be presenting to trade partners come this offseason. If the core got kicked to the curb, certainly these two guys should follow. I don’t think I’m saying this for the first time.
Yeah, the Cubs are back on the train alright… back on the train to nowhere. Still, it was an especially big series win over the Reds… big because I had some money on them. Actually, I had $20 on each Cubs Reds series throughout the year; I was down $40 when the massacre occurred. It certainly felt like I would be down $80 when the dust settled, but NO… no, I’m even now! So yes, thank you Cubs; thank you for playing hard. And thank you Reds, for choking away your playoff position, although with so many games remaining against the Pirates, they should still be OK.
At least these wins give me some more baseball to talk about. At least these wins are easing me back into watching baseball again. I’m slowly getting less and less angry, bitter, fill in the blank… I’m not there yet, but I’m better. Thanks for asking, and Go Cubs! If they win out, that train ends up in the playoffs; any takers???
