It’s pretty cloudy right now; actually, for us Cubs fans, it’s downright pouring out there. Plenty of gray, gloomy skies, surrounded by a bunch of crap; it’s definitely not raining tacos. But in this dark landscape, there is a ray of sunshine; actually, rays of sunshine. I can’t listen to anybody talk about the Cubs. Certainly not anybody on the Marquee network, who are working hard on that spin that I don’t want to hear anything about right now. Certainly not any national guys; I don’t typically listen to them anyways, but now, to hear them gush about OUR guys on other teams… No, but, there are a couple guys that I listen to; these are the only guys that I can trust right now in this tough time. I’ve always loved listening to them, but now more than ever… Yes, it’s Pat and Ron.
I love them more than our play by play guys. Len and JD were good; before them, after Stone left, not so much. After them, with Mr. National TV guy and JD, the guy Marquee keeps trying to replace, who is drinking that kool aid to avoid being kicked to the curb, no contest. It’s the radio where I turn. Pat is a Hall of Fame broadcaster; to see the jerk from the other side of town get in before him is ridiculous. And Ron… I guess that’s always been a constant as well. Before Coomer, of course it was Santo, the biggest Cubs cheerleader. But Coom… he’s solid too. In fact, it was something he said the other night that actually made me think positive for the first time.
He talked about how now, that the stars are gone, opportunity is the result. He talks about the up and coming guys, and how their chance may actually be in their reach right now. Yes, yes, that’s one way we can look at things. With an MLB roster firmly in place, the outlook for a minor leaguer trying to make a team is bleak. Certainly there is no MLB roster in place right now in Wrigley. We have a couple guys, but other than that, it’s open season. So NOW is the time for these young guys to make it happen. Maybe in these last couple months, but most certainly the start of next year. That is a good thing. Now we just have to hope we have those guys that can and will take the next step, and be successful when they do get here.

When I had the radio on Wednesday night, the Cubs were losing 2-0 after the first 4 batters of the game; yeah, that’s about right. Thankfully right now, the Olympics have been on, and have given me another reason not to watch them right now. But after putting my son to bed, I checked the score, and lo and behold, the Cubs were winning 3-2 in the 9th. So I turned it on; I was glad I did. One of the young guys getting a chance right now is Manny Rodriguez, our current closer. He looked great. He was bringing it up there at 98-99 MPH every single rip. I like his mannerisms on the mound. He shut the door and the Cubs got a W. I like him already.
The Cubs would go on to lose the series finale on Thursday afternoon; I didn’t even realize the game was on. I’ve been trying to distance myself for a bit… But… I do know who the Cubs play this weekend. Yep, it’s that timing thing again…
