I had dreaded this day; it had been on my mind for a while now.

My phone rang; it was charging. I saw it was my brother calling; I ran down to get it. We had been dealing with an issue at work; I thought it was about that. As I got closer to my phone, another feeling came over me. What if somebody got traded? Rizzo to the Yankees? Rizzo to the Yankees. Damn…

What the F… That… was a gut shot.

After my son finally fell asleep, I headed outside. I unfurled the ripped Cubs flag flying in front of my house. I started to smoke that cigar I had been waiting, wanting to smoke for a while. I needed to process this. Actually, it went pretty well for a minute. I had put a Jordan t-shirt on, one of my oldest, and favorite t-shirts; that provided me some comfort. And as I smoked the cigar, I watched this 3 year old Michael Jordan interview with a guy from Cigar Aficionado; of course it was good. It got my mind off the BS, for a little bit. How the hell is Anthony Rizzo not finishing his career in a Cubs uniform?

There’s been a lot of death around me lately. A guy’s father from work, my dad’s cousin, my cousin, a girl’s cousin from work… How important should a guy getting traded from one of my teams be? People who are not sports fans would think it’s absolutely stupid to be upset about this. Yet, I am upset. I’m trying to think of the last time I was this upset about a player leaving Chicago… Jimmy Butler maybe… any of the Hawks from the Cup teams… the other Cubs from the World Series team… Wilber Marshall… MJ referenced the Last Dance, which had yet to be released, during this interview. If I lived through letting Jordan walk… this is cake, right?

Rizzo was a good guy. I didn’t know him personally; I just know a lot of stuff he’s done off the field, like all the childhood cancer stuff. But just like I say players should be judged for their on the field stuff when bad stuff surfaces, the same should apply when good stuff is happening off the field, right? I just think about building a team, and the type of guys I would want on there. Anthony Rizzo is one of those guys; Kris Bryant is too btw… I have a feeling I’ll be writing about him tomorrow. The Cubs didn’t improve their team today. Maybe I’ll be rooting for one of these “prospects” in a couple years; I hope I will. But today, we got worse. It’s a business; I get it. It doesn’t mean I have to like it.

A Roberto Clemente award winner; I’m sure Anthony cherishes that one. He said all the work he was doing to help kids with cancer was much more important than winning the World Series; he’s right. He’s no slouch on the field either. Sure, he’s seen better days; haven’t we all? Sure, he has back issues that pop up from time to time; don’t we all? He’s no spring chicken; nobody is getting any younger. If there was a captain on this Cubs team, it would be Rizzo. We just traded away our captain. Does that make sense?

Is it a smart business move? I guess that’s what the Cubs will want us to believe; I don’t buy it… but I’ve never been good with that whole head vs heart thing. Rizzo should have been locked up way before today; we have a couple other guys that should be too… it’s probably too late. Whose fault is that? There I go… looking to blame somebody. That’s what we do when we’re upset, no?

A World Series champion… with our Cubs?!?! Wait, the Cubs won the World Series? A little less than 5 years, and 3 additional playoff appearances later, Rizzo, who was at the heart of this World Series team, was sent packing… Sure, the Cubs haven’t won it all again. Sure, there is blame to be passed around for that. Sure, our stars, leaders share that. All good things come to an end Rizzo said after the trade was announced…

I got a text a couple hours ago: Where’s your therapy session for today? Well, here it is; I think I’ll need some follow ups. But hey, the Bulls drafted Ayo… a piece of good news to end a rough day. I don’t think tomorrow will be much better…
