Does anybody else think it’s weird watching the Olympics with everything saying Tokyo 2020? I understand that’s when these games were originally supposed to take place, and maybe all that stuff was already made/printed, but… it’s 2021. And I’m guessing many folks don’t want to be reminded of 2020, the year of the pandemic. Although this year is still technically part of it… when will it all end? Well, I’m just glad the Olympics are going. Fans or no fans, I always enjoy watching them.
It’s a little different without fans, but not as much as the other sporting events last year. We used to be able to go watch our teams play, but in the Olympics, who really made that trek? Family, for sure would be there, but other than them? I’m sure it costs a ton of money. Don’t get me wrong; it would be cool to go… bucket list item maybe? But for most of us, we’re used to watching the Olympics on TV anyways… so not much of a difference. I’m sure that’s where most of the bucks are coming in anyways? I guess it’s worst for the host country, figuring if the games were in your country, you’d think a bit more about going than if it was halfway around the world. The folks in Japan will be missing out right after the Olympians’ families.
Let’s start with the new event: skateboarding. We were watching pretty much all of that, late into the night on Saturday. Although the favored US skater did not win, it’s always cool to see the host country take down the event. I think the addition of skateboarding was a great thing. Watching the stuff these guys do on those boards, the punishment they take when they wipe out; they are definitely athletes. I remember I had a skateboard once… I couldn’t ride that thing for shit. Maybe I gave up too soon, or maybe that skill just isn’t in my arsenal. Either way, these guys were awesome to watch.

Whatever sport, whatever country we’re talking about, just making it to the world’s biggest stage is an accomplishment. Congrats to all the Olympians. Just like all of us, the pandemic put a huge kink in their plans for greatness… all those years of training… had to add one more before finally getting their chance in Tokyo… in 2021! There’s got to be something that says that, no? I haven’t seen it yet… maybe it’s just me. I’m watching anyways. What’s next?
