The Cubs came up short on Sunday, not finishing the job of sweeping MLB’s worst team. But hey, we did win the series, and that needs to become a habit if the Cubs want to climb back in this thing. But what does that mean in a 4 game series, like our next one against St. Louis? It means winning 3 out of 4.
Maybe the Diamondbacks aren’t as bad as their record? Am I just looking for excuses to not be pissed about not sweeping them? Their starting pitching is underrated in my opinion; the reason I know this is because I’ve been watching them in my fantasy baseball league. I drafted MadBum, he had a good start, then I dumped him; he’s not very good. But there are a couple other guys who are decent. First one is Zac Gallen. He was highly rated coming into the season. He hasn’t pitched up to expectations, then he got hurt, but he’s got it in him. I wanted to draft him, but got outbid. He’s currently on my watch list; if he can continue to pitch like he did on Saturday against us, I may scoop him. Thank God for that improbable comeback or we’d be looking at a series loss after Sunday.
Merrill Kelly is another one; we got a first hand look at him in the series finale. He shut us down, in very efficient fashion. I had him on my team at one point, but I let him go; I’ve still been watching him, including seeing him get picked up by another team. He’s actually an OK pitcher. So while I want to be pissed at the Cubs offense, maybe we have to give a little credit to the Arizona starters? Even the guy pitching next for them, Caleb Smith has been doing OK. Maybe if we saw him instead of MadBum, we would have been the team getting swept? Well, let’s not give them too much credit, but we will see them again in short order, when they come to Wrigley after we return from St. Louis. Although we’re a different team at Wrigley, right? Well, that’s not good news, considering we’ve already played 7 more home games than road games. The Cubs will need to start and continue this series winning trend away from the Friendly Confines.

Our only MLB player we received in the Yu-Caratini trade wasn’t good, neither were the “2nd string” bullpen guys we brought in. Tepera is still not back yet, and without a lead we typically will not see Kimbrel and Chafin. I thought Kyle Ryan was going to be decent after his first impression a couple years back, but he can’t quite get it going. Adam Morgan has had more bad than good moments. Dan Winkler has been trustworthy for the most part, but he’s had his control problems. Rex Brothers had it going there for a little bit, but he’s been suspect, including giving up the insurance runs via 2 run homer in the bottom of the 8th that proved to be the difference. Still, the offense needs to be better, even if the Arizona starters are underrated a bit.
OK, on to St. Louis. I hate talking about “must win” games, but… taking 3 out of 4 feels important. The Brewers just swept the Reds (thanks Cincy), and have bumped the lead to 9 games. If the Cubs are going to make any noise, they need to build on this series victory, and they need to get going quickly. Go Cubs!
