July 16, 2021: The Start of Something

Did you miss the Cubs? I missed the Cubs, although it was a nice break. It was nice not having to worry about them losing another one. Although we had to listen to all the rumors, waiting to hear who will be traded, expecting to be in this mode until the end of the month, the Cubs record remained the same, sitting at 44-46 for a good 4 days. Friday night in Arizona, the Cubs returned.

Thank you scheduling gods? To start off with a series against the worst team in the majors was just what the doctor ordered. If that didn’t make you feel confident, then the guy on the mound for the Cubs in the series opener should have. Remember when Kyle had a rough start to the season? After 5 starts in April, Kyle finished with a 1-3 record, not getting past the 4th inning in 3 of those starts. Since then, 11-1, including 10 straight wins after Friday night in Arizona. He hasn’t lost a decision since May 9th against Pittsburgh. The Cubs have only lost 2 out of the last 12 starts he’s made, the 10 run Brewer explosion in the 8th inning, followed by a Reds comeback and 1 run victory in Cincy; both of these games were during the 11 game losing streak. Hopefully Friday’s W is the start of something completely opposite.

Unfortunately, I don’t watch any pre or post game stuff from Marquee; it sucks. I just can’t get into it. If I was a fan of just one regular on either of those shows, maybe I’d tune in. On Friday, I was flipping around, and heard a bit of Ross talking before the game. He was excited to give guys more of a chance now that Joc is gone… including Happ… which was co-signed by Sutcliffe who was in the booth. Hasn’t Happ had enough opportunities? He now has 273 plate appearances, which is probably about 200 too many, but now we’re excited to give him MORE chances? Well, his 184 batting average can’t get worse, can it?

But no negativity… not now. The Cubs won a game. Rizzo went deep; Wisdom went deep. That guy Kyle was dealing. This was the Diamondbacks, but so what. We should start off the 2nd half with a 3 game winning streak, which probably won’t change the thinking of upper management, but certainly would go a long way in providing some good feelings for us fans. Winning cures all. A small 3 game winning streak against the major’s worst team may not stop the Cubs from being sellers, but it’s something… I know we’re supposed to take one game at a time, yada yada… and you really should, but after these first three against the D-backs, we head to St. Louis for 4 games, only to return back home to face Arizona again. So it was an 11 game losing streak that changed the direction of this season; would a 10 game winning streak do the same? Yeah, St. Louis ain’t shit either…

Welcome back Cubbies, well, everybody except Joc who is wearing another uni. But that’s OK… shit, even if we move Kimbrel, whose value is pretty, pretty high, I won’t be devastated. But… how about we balance this out with an extension or two or three? Is that too much to ask? Well, if they weren’t done in the offseason, and they weren’t done when the Cubs were in first place, they certainly won’t get done now, right? Winning does matter, no? Well, here’s hoping the Cubs start winning, a lot, and make that “sell” decision a bit harder. Go Cubs!
