I love playing games; I’ve always liked that. Ever since I was a kid, bugging my parents to play a board game, or cards, or jumping on my Atari, or playing a wiffle ball game outside with my brother, I’m always looking to do something competitive I guess. Sure, I love to win, but just playing something is the key. As I sat at my wife’s family’s house, watching them play dominoes, I was ready to learn…
I already figured out something. Even though I can’t understand Spanish, I could tell who was winning and who was losing by hearing who was doing the talking. Lots of trash talking and laughing for the team that was winning, not so much from the other side. But then, after the next game, the roles were flipped. It was funny; I can relate. If I’m playing and I’m winning, I’m in the best mood… talking away, giving a play by play. You knew I wasn’t doing well if I was quiet… Ok, what’s next.
Well, one of the players left and there was a seat opened, so I was pulled into the game. When her cousin asked, of course I wanted to play, regardless if I knew how or not. I would figure it out. I spent part of the trip out in NYC learning how to play dominoes. I swear I played before. In concept, it’s not that hard, but getting good at it… well, like anything, it takes practice. No matter what her cousin told me, and I appreciated every tip, I would have to learn through playing. I looked forward to the challenge.

The one difference I guess is in Spades, you call your books/tricks up front, so you have a clue on what your partner has. In dominoes, at least the version we were playing, you don’t. So how do you know what your partner has? The key in the game is trying to setup your partner; how do you do that if you don’t know what they have? I was busy enough trying to figure out how to play the dominoes I had in my hand; this is where the learning curve remains. However, by the end of the trip, I figured out how to play MY hand…
You have to pay attention, duh. And for a new player like myself, it takes more time… to see what’s going on, to run the numbers in your head. The more you play, the more natural that becomes… like keeping track of the high cards, suits, and spades in Spades. Seeing what’s out there, seeing what the other players are playing, will give you a clue as to what’s next, and how this game is going to play out, and what you need to do to influence it. I didn’t play nearly enough to get good, but I think I can at least move on to Dominoes 102.
But again, it’s the game itself. It’s doing something with your family, friends, or just some random people that you end up playing with. I think it’s that part that I love, and of course the competitive part. Thanks for the dominoes lesson cuz…
