The ride to the airport was a breeze. I thought there might have been a little traffic. Got to Midway in like 30 minutes. The airport wasn’t crowded either. We had to check a bag; skycap was open. Security was nothing. We were there more early than we needed to be, but that’s ok. We are going to Vegas.
From what I had heard, Vegas was back. From what I saw when I arrived, is that Vegas is not ready. Maybe that’s just been my experience at the Rio. First time staying off the strip, like ever. The line to check in was more than ridiculous. Even the line for the guests who pre-checked in was nuts; the regular line was 3x as long. Guy tells me to go to the VIP line; ok. I’m not a VIP, but that line was the shortest by far, so I’ll listen; I still waited an hour. I thought, if this doesn’t work, I’m throwing that guy under the bus so fast. I don’t typically make a habit of that; in fact, almost never. But for this, yeah I was ready; the guest before me did all the dirty work, explaining why she was in this line. She mentioned me, and I’m thinking OK because that will help me vs. keep my name out of your mouth. The person I went to didn’t even question it. Cool, we have our room. The room is bigger than normal because it’s off strip; I like that.
Next test of patience came at the elevators. Looked like half the elevators were out of service, which for the busiest day of the week meant long lines at the elevator too! It’s never been like this. Maybe we should have stayed on the strip…but we wanted to avoid some of the crowds, you know, Covid and all. Little did I know that Covid is over in Vegas; I should have known… the ventilation is great in these casinos. But seriously, if you think the same people that will smoke cigarettes at the slot machines while hauling around an oxygen tank were going to worry about some virus, you got another thing coming.

And it’s back whether you’re ready or not. Back to being ready…and again, maybe it’s just my experience at the Rio, but they got no people working. While I thought this was because of the unemployment benefits that people are enjoying vs coming back to work, I’ve heard that it’s the casinos that are scheduling or in this case NOT scheduling people to work; that’s messed up. Now I’m sure Vegas took a hit like a lot of places, but the millions will come flowing back shortly; how much are they really hurting? By all looks of it, people are coming back to Vegas; this would be one of those first destinations that would return to normal. I mean, who doesn’t love Vegas. So in turn, everything should be ramping back up, no?
Well, Sunday night rolled around and I was ready to roll. After all, that first night in Vegas has always been so good to me. Viva!
