June 14, 2021: Reading is Fun

Read any good books lately? I haven’t always been this way, but for a bit now, I’m always in the middle of a book. Lately, it’s been all about baseball.

The one I just finished was The Bad Guys Won, about the 1986 New York Mets. I got this idea after watching the Baseball Seasons episode on the year 1986. I had heard stories about that Mets team, the wild and crazy bunch, and wanted to get into the weeds a bit more. Obviously not a Mets fan, but I felt like this team reminded me of another, which is near and dear to my heart, the 85 Bears. I’ve read plenty of books about them. This, plus the way that season ended, with the Buckner ball through the legs, the Red Sox heartbreak… the way the Mets were down to their last strike a few times, and came back to win that game, and the Series. They pretty much lead wire to wire; they were a great team. This was all interesting, but obviously I wanted to read about more of their off the field antics. Whew… talk about going 0-60 over an 162 game season… drunk pretty much after every game, taking stuff during the games to help rebound… the drugs that Doc and Darryl got into, the violence, both on the field, in the form of 4 bench clearing brawls, to off the field, in bar fights, Strawberry with his wife… Dykstra the degenerate gambler… It was a lot of fun to read. The timing of the events, the year 1986, was right in my wheelhouse, as far as starting to watch and pay attention to baseball. I remember a lot of that NLCS vs Houston; I remember a lot of that World Series. I remember most of that Mets team, and for that matter, every single major league team, because I was collecting baseball cards. Returned this book to the library already…

Next up is The Cup of Coffee Club; I’m about 2/3 of the way done with this one. This one is very good as well. The whole premise of the book is following the journey of 11 guys who played in exactly 1 major league game; that is really something. To spend your entire life, decades, trying to get to the bigs… pouring everything into that journey, to finally get there… you made it! Then, for that to be the one and only game you ever play in the majors… wow. I think I’ll go into some more detail, kind of like a book report on this one once I’m finished; I definitely have some more thoughts here.

On the on deck circle is another one that was prompted by watching the Baseball Seasons episodes. The book is about Dave Stieb, pitcher from the Toronto Blue Jays. The name of it is Tomorrow I’ll Be Perfect, which is a really good title, since he came 1 out away from a no hitter 3 separate times! The funny thing is… this book was written BEFORE all that happened. He did finally get his no-hitter in 1990. I’m looking forward to reading this; I’m fascinated by the fact that he was 3 outs away, over a 16 year career, from tying Sandy Koufax with the 2nd most hitters thrown all time with 4. Of course the Ryan Express holds the record with 7. I should be starting this one soon.

Reading is fun; it also puts me to sleep. But if it’s a good book, I’m in. If I’m riding to and from work on the train, I’m in. If I try to read late at night, I will be out… sleeping. I’ve been trying to squeeze in some more reading here and there, it ain’t easy. Better than constantly being on my phone though…
