After taking two on the chin Thursday and Friday in San Francisco, the Cubs spent the weekend splitting the remaining two games with the Giants, salvaging a single win on Sunday afternoon. The Cubs are still tied for first place in the NL Central.
You always split aces right? Getting ready for my Vegas trip, thinking about blackjack, and being dealt 2 aces… it’s a no brainer… just like doubling down on 11 regardless of the card the dealer is showing; that’s just me. We saw two aces in action in the second half of the series against the Giants. How good has Kevin Gausman been for the Giants? Well, not good enough for the hottest hitter in MLB to take him deep on Saturday. Patrick Wisdom… my God. My son is still pissed at me that I didn’t scoop him up in my fantasy league. Other than that though, Gausman was dealing, leading the Giants to a win. If anybody is going to beat the Cubs, Gausman is a fine choice, being on my fantasy team and all. But seriously, you will run into an ace every now and then; you just have to chalk it up. On Sunday, we turned to our ace to stop the losing streak.
Kyle Hendricks has been up and down this year, but if anybody in the rotation we have to trust, we MUST trust, it’s Kyle. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he did enough to get the W, and that’s all that really matters. Sunday was the formula that the Cubs are going to win the most games with. A quality start from our starter, 4 runs from our offense, and the bullpen shutting the door. Unfortunately, and not to beat a dead horse or anything, but the component that worries me the most is the quality start from our starting pitcher. Patrick Wisdom was at it again for our offense. Over 162, you need surprises from guys… when your big bats aren’t hot, you need big hits from other sources. Wisdom has been that source lately. A 2012 Cardinals first round pick… haha… he’ll get a chance to show them in person how hot he is this weekend. And our pen… Tepera, Chafin, and Kimbrel in the last 3 innings of any game with a 1 run lead has me feeling pretty confident. But yeah, that starter… Kyle came through when we needed him on Sunday; now we must wait another turn through the rotation until we see him again. Will the other guys help keep us afloat until then? I’m sure the Padres will be gunning for some revenge this week in San Diego…

Now 2.5 games out, we’ll get our chance to set them back some more this weekend, the first where Wrigley will be at 100% capacity since 2019; that should be fun. But the Brewers… yeah, they received the gift of the Diamondbacks this weekend and took full advantage, pulling even with the Cubs atop the NL Central standings. Now they go to Cincy… go Reds?
Most importantly is that winning formula for the Cubs. Still waiting for help from above, the Cubs will try to get back to winning series against the Padres and Cards this week. We missed Yu first time around, but won’t get so lucky this time. We’ll see him in the series finale Wednesday afternoon, while we send the guy he replaced with the Cubs, that’s back with the Cubs, Jake. Looking forward to that one, although that has the potential to put our major flaw on blast again… 2 games until then… going to try to stay up for these. Go Cubs!
