May 28, 2021: Taking That First Step

It’s all about taking that first step… admitting you have a problem, or in this case, admitting we may have something with AA. OK, I won’t be that lazy today… of course I’m talking about Adbert Alzolay; I can never remember how to spell his name… I better get used to it. He pitched his ass off in the Cubs 1-0 win over the Reds on Friday afternoon in Wrigley.

I remember when he was first called up… my son and I were actually at the game, on June 20, 2019 against the Mets; it was a little bit nicer at Wrigley that evening. He didn’t start the game, but he did get the win. He came in the game in the 5th inning and pitched until the 9th, giving up only 1 hit (a home run) and striking out 5 as the Cubs beat the Mets 7-4. I was excited to see this homegrown pitching prospect that the Cubs have been sorely lacking in this golden era. Don’t see many pitchers wearing the #73 either. He only pitched in 3 other games that year, and then 6 in the 2020 COVID season. Was this guy going to stick? Well, I think as of May 28, 2021, the answer is yes. He’s stayed healthy and started his turn in the rotation 9 times thus far this year. Sure, his record may sit at 3-4, but I think we’ve seen enough to believe he CAN be a Cubs starter for years to come. This would be a huge boost, especially for this year, where our starting pitching may be our weakest link.

It certainly wasn’t in this game. AA threw the most pitches of his career, which should have got him through 6 full if it wasn’t for a borderline call that went against him on his final pitch. I was totally fine with Ross going to the pen at that point. I mean, why not? The bullpen finished the rest of the 3.1 innings, now bringing their scoreless streak to 38 innings. WOW!!! Per Jesse Rogers, that’s the 6th longest streak in the divisional era. I’m sure they will give up a run at some point, so let’s try not to lose our minds, but let’s enjoy the heck out of this unbelievable run while it’s here.

The Cubs have been one of the best teams in baseball in May; the Padres have been a bit better… they’ll be at Wrigley starting Monday. We’ll be in the house by the way. My son loves Fernando Tatis Jr; somebody (my sister) bought him a Tatis t-shirt for Christmas… WTH? Haha. I told him it would be OK to wear it to the game, as long as he wears his Cubs hat… and his Cubs jersey over it… haha. Anyways, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We still have 2 more games against the Reds. Absolutely no reason to take any games for granted; the Cubs ain’t that good. It’s supposed to clear up the rest of the weekend; still may be a bit chilly on Saturday, warming up a bit more on Sunday. It certainly was a pitcher’s day on Friday. I am happy when the Cubs win; it’s been a really good week for that. Let’s keep it rolling. Go Cubs!
